Anyone local a computer guru? wanna make a little cash?

sitaution: wife's desk top crapped out, strange error upon boot up. i have honestly no idea what it is currently, a decent buy about 4 years ago.

need:

1. someone to fix the issue and also maybe if the price is right:

2. upgrade to a better board with faster processor

3. upgrade with more memory

4. upgrade with larger HD perhaps

seeking someone who knows what htey are doing, dont mind used parts if you have some laying around, as long as relaible, its all good. perhaps a reinstallation of some key software too...

feel free to email me: simplicitysound@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Hello Bing, with the price of the computers now days, rather than to pay someone to fix the problem and upgrade it, wouldnt it be cheaper and not to mention its simpler just purchase an new one? that is, unless you have an Apple/Mac.

Sounds like you should just get a new one. Buy one tomorrow and you will get vista.

Any important files on your system? If you get new motherboard w/CPU, you'll most likely need to reformat or install software on new harddrive, while keeping old one as slave.

PS: "Decent buy 4 years ago" doesnt get you far in life when dealing with computers

well, motherboard + CPU + HDD + new memory would probably cost you $200-300 + tax and/or shipping. I don't know what kind of monitor you have, but suggest upgrading to LCD if you havent yet. What i'm leaning to is: Get one of those Dell Deals. They have nice combos where you get 19" LCD and all that will run for ~$400 + you can finance for 12 months. Once you get the computer, just plug in (or have someone else) your old HDD as a slave drive and thats it. You'll have all your files and not waste much time/money on it.

http://www.fatwallet.com/c/18/ is a good site for this.
www.digitaldeals.net is another site i look at.

just my $0.02

bing, extracting data on your hd and have it burnt to dvd is very easy. In fact i'll be in the SJ area sometime this week unless my meeting gets pushed back. My meeting is just a few miles away from your pad. I can swing by after if you want.

With the stuff you have listed you're essentially building a new computer. The only thing youre really missing is the audio/video cards.
I think $300 for HD,motherboard,CPU,RAM, will get you crap. If all you do is look at pictures and check email that would probably be ok, but if you're doing any gaming, or even alot of the high-end websites now are pretty intensive.
For what I would consider a med-grade sys you're looking at about $500 for the stuff listed. (200GB seta HD, 3.4Ghz CPU, 1GB ram) You can check out component prices at pricewatch.com.
It takes a bit of price checking, and time to build a complete sys from scratch. If time is important you may wanna just grab somethin on sale at bestbuy.

All you gotta do is buy a new comp, and then take the HD out of your old comp and then plug it in your new comp as a secondary drive, as your slave. That part should be very very easy, jsut make sure the jumper on the HD reads as slave, plug it in...i can show you some pics in my comp...now you have a new comp tahts faster and all you're old stuff as well.

I really doubt he'll be doing any gaming, specially if he still has a '4 yearold system'.

But yea, see post #7 again and just do what i say reason to go with Dell is you also get LEGIT OS. And what I learned in this short life, is you need 2 Legit softwares: OS and Antivirus. Everything else you can 'buy' at any internet 'store'

If you decide to go with just the system w/out monitor, you should be able to get one for $300

just my $0.04
