From what I know its been a few years in cali were exhaust tickets are not fixable.sometimes some police officers will write it up as fix it buts its not fixable once you get to court you get the bad news. Again fix it and get a REF. from chp my friend has done it a few times.

Chapter 5, Article 2 and Article 2.5 or sections 21750 VC through 27207 VC should answer any questions you have regarding exhaust requirements in California.

Oops. Yep 27150. 21750 is unsafe passing. Proofread, proofread, proofread!

(about 5 miles) he said "do u live here, well i pulled you over because of your exhaust." he later said that it was illegal to modify your exhaust in California unless your exhaust came with some paper or certificate that says its CA smog legal. I think he was probably looking to hassle someone but when he noticed i was in a wheelchair he just decided on a fix it ticket. THats basically it, my friend owns his own shop and swapped the stock exhaust for me and i had it signed off. Then about a week later put my ehaust back on. thats my experience.
there have been guys whom have gotten fix-it tickets for their stock exhaust (with no exhaust mods what-so-ever). The HKS system is legal. You just need to prove it or re-install the stock exhaust just to get rid of the ticket. Cops are dumb

Not to get off track but I have a friend who was given a ticket for his stock wing on his EVO, went to court and made the cop look real dumb but that is not a jab at cops in general, it just happens.

Exhaust systems.....legal or not?

Exhaust manufacturers spend weeks on the dyno sorting out all the diffrent
issues with a new system........the way it fits, highest HP and then sound.
There isn't a major manufacturer out there that's going to put out a system
that's going to get you busted.......if you add headers and test pipes that
changes everything! I wouldn't want to get a ticket for removing my cats...
or possibly have my car impounded because of it! Even hi-flow cats are
illegal on our cars......in Ca.

+1 . . . Anyone? I would not mind doing this as a precaution. Actually, it's a good idea.

Let's see:
Tanabe Super Medallion-50.00 objectional harsh environmetal noise
HKS Mini Dragger- 50.00 illegal equipment
ApexI Dunk- 50.00 illegal equipment
Skunk2- harsh environmental noise
stock exhaust on my G35- NoPe not yet!

I think anything that any aftermarket mod just looks and sounds suspect to the police thus giving them a reason to pull you over. And besides everything is illegal to them regardless if it is DOT spec or not.

Most of the exhaust come with a decible certificate. I know Greddy does.

The system from the cats to the muffler tips has nothing to do with emissions and I have never seen one with a CARB #. You need CARB numbers for intakes etc, but not for your mufflers. The only thing you can get rolled for is noise like others have said.

I used to get pulled over for silly stuff like this, I drove my Nova around in High School, always got pulled over at night, they used to complain about my DOT legal slicks, they said they were bald, so I pulled out my tread depth gauge every time and they would get so pissed, man those times were nice. Just know your ****, be really polite to the cops, and you will be fine.

My exhaust was loud though~
after read all these messages from exhaust loudness, I just curious how loud is too loud compare to the stock and aftermarket? Like twice as louder than the stock or triple?? I know some time there is a suv with some rap song park next to my car, his music would vibrates my entire car. I wonder these people would have a serious hearing problem at later age, what's fun about loud music on the street, for car, perhaps, it's a bit different stories!

I got my certified a few years back from a police station in Rohnert park, I got pulled over for being to loud and just knew it wasn't. The cop did a decible check and siad I was good to go but I asked if I could get the numbers in writing and he said sure. I think any ref. station can do the same.
