Need some help/advice on this

I have a 04 6MT

I never had this problem until a friend(mechanic) of mine did a 30k mile service on my car. I get this "wind" noise from front passenger side. It happens every morning for around 5mins as I drive. What could it possibily be? my mechanic changed air filter, cabin filter, flushed tranny fluid (mobil 1 synthetic), changed engine oil, and flushed rear differentials.

After the service I was having problems shifting into 2nd gear in the morning and I get this annoying "wind" noise (sounds halfway between a flat tire and air intake, the sound matches speed, even in neutral)... WHICH NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE THE 30K SERVICE...but all goes away after 5-10mins of driving.

Btw, most people say this happens only when its freezing out, but for me the coldest it gets here in the morning is only like 40-60 degrees.

Please give me some advice. Thanks in advance!

PS. I did search on this topic, but no one has a solution to this yet.

Are you letting the car warm up properly? If it's just happening the first 5 minutes, maybe you should let the tranny fluid warm up before you start to drive it and see if you're still having the same problems.

I have this problem too. When it's between 40-60 *F outside, and my car starts up cold, I get the howling wind noise coming from the passenger side when I reach about 40mph. After the car warms up, it goes away.

How does it have anything to do with the tranny? I have replaced my 6mt's and differential's fluid with Shell Spirax S 75W-90. It has never bothered me to the point where I'd make an exclusive trip to the dealer to get it fixed. I'm more afraid of them breaking something else while trying to fix this problem.

I've heard that spirax s is good stuff. there is a lot of positive feedback on this forum about how it makes shifts feel very smooth.

Like I said, this all started happening when my friend did the 30k service...this only limits to either cabin air filter, or tranny flush...I don't think engine air filter or the rear differential flush can cause this type of noise, and blah its $140 for dealer to check whats wrong with it. I really wish someone knew whats going on provided that the tech section is full of people with the same problem but no solution.

thanks kris.

what do you think will happen if I just leave it be? Is this an early sign of tranny failure, and how far out does it fail?

i would bring it to the dealer and have them do a oil change and tranny oil change then go back and say hey my cars making a funny noise hahhaha.

i think everyone that had that noise just brought it to the dealer and they replaced the tranny, so not sure what will happen if you dont get it fixed.

I took the G in for a transmission service at the dealership this morning. Apparently they use Quaker State tranny fluid syn and non-syn. I asked if warranty will be voided if we use anything other than Nissan J-matic, he said it was for automatics only. So I asked him to order some amsoil and do a tranny service. Lets see if this gets rid of the "wind" noise and the grinding in 2nd gear. If the problem continues to exist...then its their problem

Dealership put in Amsoil MTL 75w-90 synthetic oil, the "wind noise" and griding problems in 1st/2nd gear are now gone every morning!

Downside is that dealer charged $15.50 per quart of amsoil. They ordered 4 quarts. I believe I saw them for $9.00 online.

Turns out that Mobil 1 synthetic is a horrible oil to use for our transmission, it is too thick and takes awhile to warm up.

Transmission flush + amsoil from dealership costed me $130. ($70 for labor and rest for oil). This also came with a car wash, window cleaning, and vaccum. Not bad.

So I was right? YEAH!!!!!

But it's good that it's fixed now and that it wasn't anything serious.

Has anyone seen a datasheet for the stock nissan fluid they use in the 6MT's? I would like to check if the synthetic gear oil I'm using has similar viscosity ratings as the stock fluid.

thanks
