Debut of North America's First and Only Porsche Drift Car by Hankook/JIC
With formula D fast approaching, we here at Tuner Playground were getting excited to see some more adrenaline filled, tire destroying, mechanical mayhem! Media day is Friday so we planned on showing up and covering it as usual but instead, to our surprise, we have something more exciting to look forward to! Thanks to some kind words from Fred Chang, Tuner Playground has been invited by Hankook to do a feature on their new drifting Porsche, including a ride-along and driver interview! lemme repeat. RIDE-ALONG
Hankook Tire America will debut North America’s first ever purpose-built DRIFTING PORSCHE, a 993 GT-2 Turbo, at Infineon Raceway. This specially modified 600-hp Porsche, outfitted with Hankook Ventus R-S2 tires, has been creating huge amounts of buzz among modified/drifting fans and auto purists alike, for months in advance of its debut.
The Hankook Tires/JIC Magic Porsche has been re-engineered with a JIC/Cross suspension that incorporates a special drifting setup opposite of the norm. Since Porsche models are heavier at the rear, softer rear springs allow the car to “squat” to get better traction. Custom control arms, tie-rods and knuckles had to be created to get the extreme angle needed for competitive drifting and to keep the tires from rubbing as the car turns.
We can hardly wait to see it in action! Keep an eye out here for the feature and go see it tear up the tarmac in person at Formula D. While you wait to see it, or if you aren’t lucky enough to make it, you can drool over this video of it.
