Help me make an earthquake kit.

Ok, so after pooping my pants multiple times last night its time for me to get an earthquake kit going.

Can you all share what you have done in preparation for a big quake?

Earthquake kit:

make a small one for your car too.

Update every 6 months and rotate your food, water & batteries.

Keep a pair of closed-toed shoes and flashlight near your bed.

Remove all items such as pictures above your bed.

Do an earthquake drill every 6 months with your family.

On your cell phone, put the initials "ICE" before the names of family members so the EMTs would know who to contact In Case of Emergency.

Do this asap.

People make fun of me when I tell them the weather's "not right" but they didn't grow up in earthquake country. I hope I'm wrong about this one, but seriously, this weather we're having right now in the Bay Area's not right.

Sweet, thx for the link.

I live in a really small apartment with limited storage space. I guess its time to devise a clever way of storing all this stuff together.

Where do you all store your stuff? I'm guessing somewhere near the bedroom or something should an earthquake hit in the middle of the night?

My earthquake kit in my home is enough for 5 people.... I have a storage space right by my patio and I have mine in those huge Rubbermaid trash cans with a lid. I stored extra stuff too for my own personal use such as lotion. You can add whatever you'd need in your kit to customize it. I also have playing cards, etc. Some people store theirs in the garage, but my garage has other stuff in there. Make sure you can get to your kit right away and don't bury it in the back of some stuff.

I have a small one for my car.

I was lucky enough to go through the 89 quake and the big black-out on the east coast (bad vacation timing). Earthquake kits are great, but from my experience, the most important item to stock up on ...water! After a quake, if you have running water, it's not drinkable, during a blackout like the one on the east coast, water pumps didn't work. Most people have a pretty healthy supply of canned food that sits in the cuppard so most of us are fine there, considering the house is still standing. In both incidents, gas was near imposssible to get and gouged to about $20 a gallon and a long line if you could get it. And one more important thing, there are definately people out there that will take advantage of a bad situation, a can of pepper spray or better wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I think it's time I prepare as well. I am in no way prepared for any type of disaster.

When it comes down to the well being of my family, I would opt for the "better".

I've lived in the bay area all my life and I don't think my family has ever been prepared for earthquakes. In fact, whenever a small quake happens, we just sit there and say "Hey, is someone shaking the couch?!"
