You dont have to have the tint place do it. You can do it yourself. Anyways, you need to take it off somehow then have a cop sign it and then pay the $10 fee. If you refuse to take it off, the fee is like $120+.

I just have my cop friend sign it off for me even though I don't take it off.

Window Tint....?

You're asking for trouble if you tint your front windshield. You may be able
to get away with tinting the other windows if you go Med or 35%. If you
get stopped for anything else they'll probably throw in the tint too, just
because they can. The shop your going to is asking way too much for the
tint job....I had mine done for $150 at Cal tint.

I got 50% all around except the windshield. In the day, it barely looks tinted. I pull up right next to cops with my windows up. I can see them and they can see me very clearly. At night it's sort of private. Looks very stock and clean.

If you tint the fronts dark, you are just asking to get pulled over.

I remember reading somewhere that the front side windows can be tinted 70% in CA. Is that not true?

if you read g35_chippie's post, then you will see that it is NOT legal. 88% max.

23120. No person shall operate a motor vehicle while wearing
glasses having a temple width of one-half inch or more if any part of
such temple extends below the horizontal center of the lens so as to
interfere with lateral vision.

A citation for tinted windows is a correctable violation. There is no point count for it. DMV won't suspend your license for it.

Kinda. It has to be clear and colorless and meet ALL of these criteria which I have yet to see:

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and
transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the
front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the
front seat if the following conditions are met:
(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88
percent.
(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all
requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49
C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance
of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as
specified in that federal standard.
(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the
ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful
ultraviolet A rays.
(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the
vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying
that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of
this subdivision and identifies the installing company and the
material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the
material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by
the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the
material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meets the
requirements of this subdivision and identifies the material's
manufacturer by full name and street address.
