Post Whoring

Moderator notes:

Last week, the 'Driver Staff discussed the rampant general post whoring of all boards. It was also discussed in the "The Lounge (Off Topic) section, as well. That particular thread has since been deleted. As such, the staff will be taking a closer look at the said and the pruning of threads has already started.

A "Useless Thread" was offered in the Lounge section in an attempt to stop the derailing of threads. However, some members deemed it unnecessary.

I trust that the NorCal section will post appropriately and use the "NorCal Useless Thread" accordingly and set an example. Useless threads/posts here will be subject to deletion or merged into the "NorCal Useless Thread".

Is there any thread currently open to the general public about this issue?

Unfortunately, no, Joker. ChristianN made a great effort to resolve the situation with a Useless Thread in the OT section. However, having been met with some slight opposition from some Staff members and 'Driver members, he abandoned the idea and deleted the thread.

Christian offered a specific PW Thread, but that was simply not good enough for everyone. So, now, his warnings are all too real and being realized by everyone.

Good luck to you guys on handling the issue.

I do my best to cooperate.

Andy:

I understand that alot of us go WAY off topic and get pretty crazy sometimes with the Post Whoring in threads...and i agree that it shouldn't happen to the extent that it does alot of the time...though i don't believe that a thread shoud just be DELETED, a simple "Get back on topic warning" seems alot more suitable, and well if that doesn't work, then delete away.

But, what i dont understand is why threads are getting deleted in the OFF-TOPIC section for being "unusefull"...isn't it OFF-TOPIC....so i dont get what makes one thread more usefull than another, cause really there are very few that are accually "USEFUL" in there...really makes absolutley no sense...

Not trying to argue or anything like that, Iunderstand where you guys are coming from, just dont think it's being handled n the correct manor, to make the members of this site happy....Like i said it does get out of hand at times and i do agree that it shouldn't get that bad...but it happening a little here and there isn't hurting ANYONE. I just dont understand what the big fuss is about it...

Thank you very much for your input, Shane.

Yes, I would agree with many of your points. Some of the 'Driver Staff, myself included, will need to be a bit more discerning, if you will, in these matters.

For myself, if a topic is of a humorous nature, I would expect myself to roll with the flow. However, if there is a discussing at hand on a specific topic, we have all seen the inappropriate/off topic remarks.

Certain situations require moderation via posts pruning and/or a simple note attempting to maintain the situation and getting things back onto the topic without deletion. Unfortunately, some suggestions go unheeded and threads do get out of hand, which require the deletion of the said.

Then you have threads, such as "Which Way Does The Water Swirl In Your Toilet When Flushed?" That, in my personal opinion, is nothing more than a PW thread, which calls for deletion.

The 'Driver community is a great place to visit. Needless to say, it is also a wonderful resource for many. We simply aim to keep it that way and wish to curb some of the sandbox like activity.

Yes, and at the weekly gatherings.

It shouldn't for NorCal. Many of the people in here have figured it out. Rather than ***** up a particular thread, they post up a question/comment in the "Useless Thread", which keeps thread topics on track and clear of clutter.

A good example of PW was on Rol's X-mas dinner thread. The poor guy begged you folks to keep his thread uncluttered for the benefit of others that had not signed up, yet. However, the wisdom of the board continued to ***** and flood his dinner thread with nonsense clutter, which may have made it difficult for others to read.

Please, remember that there is a silent majority here, whom view the boards, as well. Why make it potentially difficult for them? Play in the PW thread.

I have to admit, some of the Staff commented that a "Useless Thread" would not work . . . That the said would not curb the PW of other threads. Please, do not prove me wrong.

Edit: As is, I have stated that there is no need for concern here in this particular board.

really!?! i think that would help out the most with all the going off topic in threads, not saying it would stop it completely but i do believe it would help alot....only problem is deleting those threads, But IMO not many people are gonna post in a thread if its eventually gonna get deleted ....

Yes, really . . . LOL However, keep in mind it was a mixed discussion by the staff.

Some felt that PWing should be dealt with. Some felt that it is the nature of things and we should afford for an outlet. Even with a said outlet, things can get out of hand . . . But hey, I'm willing to work with it, evident by the fact that we have a "Useless Thread" here.

Yes, if PWing for the sake of glorifying one's post count is the goal, then a useless thread, which will be deleted, is obviously not going to work . . . Nor is that the purpose for such a thread.

In any event, a wise and respected Admin has just stickied a Useless Thread over in the Lounge/Off Topic section. The experiment continues.

A lot of people in this section probably haven't been around long enough to remember what happened to the SoCal section. They had a bad "whoring" problem there and instead of heeding the numerous warnings from staff members they took an argumentative and challenging stance towards the powers that be. This eventually resulted in the SoCal section being shut down entirely. I doubt that will happen again, but we should NEVER let the NorCal section get that bad. I, for one, will make more of an effort to curb my “whoring”.

Eloy, thank you for your timely comments. Yes, the SoCal boards were shut down for an extended period due to repeated warnings about PWing. It was a hard lesson learned.

I have echoed the same comments in the past. I believe that it is safe to say that will not happen here on the NorCal boards.
