But 5 is awesome if you got company but going down 5 alone would be a PAIN

Getting on the 210 offf the 5 may be a good bet to West Covina - I hate that whole section from Valencia to the 5-10-101-60 interchange.
San Bernadino, though - maybe take Hwy 59 from Bakersfield to US-395, then south? Never done that route, but it may be a possibility, separated from LA traffic by mountains.
Went down the 5 on a spur of the moment decision to go to a college reunion. Let's just say that the experience is a lot different at 3 am.

Miss all the crappy 80/680/580 to 5 bay area traffic.
If you get tired, stop at Kettleman turn off, ~halfway there depending where in LA you going..
Stretch, eat, top off fuel. Best prices there was Valero at the end on the left of strip. Better than LA/Bay prices.
Once your pass Valencia (magic mountain) and pass the 118 (closer to San Fernando Valley) take 210 East and miss downtown LA traffic.
Or if you miss that, go further down the 5 pass the 170 and take 134 Pasadena which turns into 210 also.
Play with mapquest for 210 to where ever. Many connecting fwy's from there to where you want to go as mentioned, with exception of west covina I think.
All in all, traffic will suck most of the time no matter when and where you are....it's LA lol. So don't be surprised lol.
Been driving this route for years. Always stay a tick below 80 and never been pulled over.
They have the eye in the sky too, so be aware of that. Seen speed demons around me get nailed that way. Better them than me

5 is definitely the fastest... make sure you have a good radar. leave at night around 9pm or even later to avoid virtually all traffic. i've done bay area to LA in a little over 4 hours before (405 miles). this was back when i was more young and reckless... not that i've changed too much
you can try the 1 too. nice coastal views. but even i got sick of the endless twisties after a while

Takes me ~5.25-6.0hrs depending on speed (tick under 80 for me) and if I stop to eat, etc. That puts me around Burbank 5/134 interchange.
You'll be well into the beginnings of Monday morning LA rush hour traffic. May want to leave earlier if possible.
You don't have a DVD ROM navi disc? One should've come with your G.
Have fun and drive safe man

David I have done that drive 3 times now to GTM and I have gone the same direction that John stated it's easier and quicker going 12 to rio vista and getting on 5 from there. Took me 6.5 hours but I went further down into LA than you are. Watch out for cops as I passed 3-4 everytime but they were busy giving out tickets already.
Wish I could go with you but I have plans this weekend.
