Problem W/ My Breaks!

Last month I got my breaks done. Crossed/drilled slotted rotors and hawk hps pads. I got it done by my cousin an ASE mechanic and he told me I don't need to bedd them in as it says on the box. Anyway, today I was going about 70+mph and this dumb a** decided to pull out, so I slammed on my breaks and the break pedal just continued sinking and I thought I was gonna hit her so hard that her car would of flipped! I came maybe an inch if that before she decided to speed up. I can't figure out why my breaks just went through. At 40mph they do fine and anything above that you just gotta pray that you stop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the hawk pads do take some time to heat up. did you seat the brakes when u got them installed? also try opening th brake fluid cap and going in the car and stepping on the pedal a few times and see if it gets stiffer.

I did a few short and slow stops. I let my car cool down for like an hour w/ out the emergency break on before I drove it again. I was told that bleeding the breaks won't do much, so I really hope that not all my money went down the drain.

^what he said

Bed the brakes forsure. If you have air in the lines, it would be soft and glide down pretty much all speeds.

K so I think I found the problem. I had my mechanic cousin drive my car and at lower speeds (40-45) the breaks stopped at a dime. So my cousin said that since I have the cross drilled/slotted rotors my rotors stay cool and Hawk pads work best w/ heat. He said at higher speeds (60+)my rotors stay really cool, so the pads need time to heat up, which leads to longer stops. He adv. me to switch my pads to ceramic and it should fix the problem. What do you guys think, any suggestions?

IMO, whenever you put on a set of new rotors (or new pads w/used rotors), a bed in procedure is a must. Properly bedding-in new brake pads results in a transfer film being generated at the pad and rotor to maximize brake performance.

I suggest you do a proper bed/break in on the pads/rotors first and if you don't see an improvement, try a set of ceramics at that point.

Here is a break in procedure I just pulled up off a search. Good luck

After installing new pads make 6 to 10 stops from approximately 35 mph with moderate pressure. Make an additional two to three hard stops from approximately 40 to 45 mph. Do not allow the vehicle to come to a complete stop. When completed with this process, park the vehicle and allow the brakes to cool completely before driving on them again. Do not engage the parking brake until after this cooling process is compete.

I have had my pads for over 300+ miles, so they have been bedded in already. I drive mainly city and never have to do high speed emergency stops, so today that freaked the living hell out of me. I think next month I will try the ceramic pads.
