I took the pics with a canon powershot sd 960IS is nothing fancy, I don't know what a tripod is or if they have one for this type of cameras. I am no photographer, but thanks for the tips and the comments on the stance.

I don't know exactly how low I dropped it, I would guess a bit over 2 inch, but I am not 100% sure. I made several adjustmentments until I like what I saw.
A tripod is basically a device that you affix your camera to to give it a stable shooting position. The benefits of it are numerous, but just a few are:

*Reduced camera shake
*Able to shoot at a lower ISO at night which will allow you to get more light in the camera, and the pics can (hopefully) come out seeming as if you shot them in brighter lighting conditions
*Shooting a stationary object at lower ISO will also reduce image noise

depends on what style you're going for and the time of day

time would be either sunrise, or sunset

i am not sure what you mean by "what style you are going for" anything with a decent backdrop would work, as long as no poles or big shadows id be fairly happy

I'm thinking UC bart parking lot, Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley, Berkeley Hills, or Bear Creek Rd behind the Berkeley Hills
