Autozone won't read codes?

So I have a check engine soon light from last week, when I turned on the car i had slip, vcd off, and check engine soon light on. I turned off the car and then back on but the check engine soon light stayed on. So I just ran over to autozone and they inform me they aren't allowed to read codes anymore, nor are they able to even lend the tool out to read codes. Does anyone have a code reader or know somewhere I can get a code read without having to pay infiniti 80 bucks to do it?

i loaned my reader to a buddy of mine but i can get it back when i see him later on down the week. where are you located?

check engine is emissions related so if you dont see any bog in performance dont worry about it too much unless you have to smog =D

If you want a cheapo OBDII code reader, try Harbor Freight.

Autozone should rent the tool out to you still...I have read on forums how autozone will check your codes, but it doesnt apply to CA. Instead, you have to put about a $100 deposit down and rent the tool, check your code, then return it and get your money back. I've done it a couple months back.

im in in the south san jose area

ahh thats a relief, I have not noticed any loss in performance and oil levels are fine. I was confused because other people with my problem have been in limp mode, etc and mine drives perfectly fine.

Did the exact same thing as 1trueG did a couple months back for a MIL on my daughters car as well. And yes agree in CA they can't do the scan for you, I asked when I was there. It's some legal thing as to why they can't.

completely stock, just picked up this car used with 37k miles about a month or so ago.

i accidentally launched a bit hard at a stop light and then drove to oakridge and went in for like 20 mins. came back out and turned it on and got the lights on. so it must have been a hard launch knocking something loose or just a strange coincidence ...
