That would depend on where you are. If your state requires the parts to meet CARB approval, then yes, they must be OEM replacements unless there are CARB approved HFCs that I have not heard about yet.

I had something like this happen to a bunch of cars in the parking lot of my hotel about a year back. You'd be surprised how fast they can get these thing off.

on the same note of theft due to hard times, I have also been going to customers houses to re-install AV equipment due to home theft as the boldness of thieves have increased in all areas even the subtle and quaint areas, not just the bad.

lock/Glock up.

The saddest thing about this, is that they'll often come back for the new ones you install! Happened to 2 people I know, hit twice! My little idea... Get out the welding torches and a 50 pack of razor blades (use your imagination), that will slow them down enough & teach 'em not to F with your cats....

That's effed up. I suggest setting a bear trap, chained to the rear axle, see what you have by morning.

Well, here's some perspective... It's easy enough that the guy unbolted my cat instead of cutting. I mean, he definately had the space since I'm on 31's, but he had the time to (kindly) unbolt...
