Coming to San Fran this weekend
Hey guys, Me and my family are flying up this weekend... Its our 1st time, so what should we do... Where should we eat and stuff... I am so excited to go! Thanks in advance guys!
Hey Mark
Pier 39, Golden Gate Park....depending on the age of your kids, my middle age kids (5 and 8) always have a great time at the Exploratorium http://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/
There's also North Beach and the SF zoo....also the Academy of Science http://www.calacademy.org/ I actually haven't been yet but I heard it's pretty cool...and also a bit pricey though.
I'm sure others will also chime in.

What kind of places to eat are you thinking of? There's all sorts, it just depends on if you're looking for fine dining, date kind of place, some good hole in the walls, or food stands. If all else fails, Yelp is a big thing out here, so if you are looking for food at a certain area, or a specific kind of food, you can find it on there!
Just stay out of the Castro and you will be golden. Im sure you dont want to have to explain to your kids why those 2 grown men are doing things that are a little unnatural.
The Golden Gate Bridge is a place to visit or drive/walk across. Catch a Giants game if possible, Im not a fan but the Stadium is awesome.

This is a great weekend to visit SF since many of the gutter punks and post modern neo hippie bad art disco raver dorks (large percentage of the population) are all at burning man.

How long will you be up here and where will you guys be staying?
If you're only around for 2 days, definitely hit up the stuff in the first part of the San Francisco list, as well as the three spots I listed in Marin County (across GG bridge). If you have an extra day, check out some of the other spots I listed in SF or hit up wine country.
SAN FRANCISCO
I'll start with the popular spots that you can do in one day:
- Alcatraz Tour. No description needed. check for tix online since weekends are tough, especially holidays
- Fisherman's wharf. Popular tourist area in the north part of the city. OK to decent food options.
- Ghirardelli Square. Walk around & grab some ice cream / chocolate at Ghirardelli's...very tasty.
- Cable car. You can grab a cable car at Ghiradelli square that will take you over the hill back to Union Square / Market Street. You can also hop off at Union Square to shop and/or grab dinner.
- Coit Tower. Nice old tower with views of the city. Just google it if you don't recognize the name.
^ You can do the above items in one day. Just park your car at one of the lots on the Embarcadero then take the trolley back around to it at the end of the day. You can then drive up to the Coit Tower to finish your day with some nice city views.
Other good spots:
- Twin Peaks / Sutro Tower overlook - awesome views of the entire city. its windy & cold up there so bring a jacket. if its cloudy in the city go during the day. if its clear, its hard to find better night views of the city.
- Walk across Golden Gate bridge. Do this if you have time. Otherwise, at least drive across it and stop by the lookout points on either side of the bridge.
- Palace of Fine Arts. Very cool/chill spot. hang out around the pond. IMO, not worth going inside though.
- Academy of Sciences. Located in Golden Gate Park. there are some really cool exhibits here, but as other have noted it is kinda pricey.
- Golden Gate Park. Good for a nice chill afternoon walking around. There are some nice ponds and gardens.
- Haight-Ashbury. Famous for the hippy culture, kinda touristy now.
- Ocean Beach / Seacliff area: Nice views of the coast on a clear day. There are also two popular restaurants here as well (Cliff House and Beach Chalet).
- Palace of the Legion of Honor. The views of the Marin Coast & GG Bridge are very nice from here. Park your car and take the
.
- Downtown / Market Street. Mostly office buildings, but there is also good shopping here as well. You can also swing by Civic Plaza and Union Square.
^ Of the above, it would be pretty easy to do Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park, Haight-Ashbury, and Twin Peaks in a day. I'd do Twin Peaks either at the beginning of the day or at the end.
I can't help you much on dining spots (I mostly cook at home), but I recommend you guys grab lunch or dinner at Cha Cha Cha (tapas place). They have two restaurants - one in the Mission and the other in Haight-Ashbury. Both are very popular cause the food is tasty and not very expensive. The restaurants I listed on Ocean Beach / Seacliff are nice, but pricier.
MARIN COUNTY (across the bay)
- Sausalito. nice views of Angel Island, the bay, and SF. your parents will like this place. Definitely visit for brunch or late afternoon snack.
- Muir Woods. Redwood forest, nice mountain drive to get there.
-
. Road overlooking Golden Gate Bridge, three awesome viewing points of bridge & city, take Alexander Ave exit from GG bridge then turn back to the left. Go up the hill as far as you can.
WINE COUNTRY
Spend a day up in wine country if you have time. I like Sonoma more than Napa. Look online to find wineries you'd like to visit. It will be crowded on a holiday weekend, but whatever. If nothing else, you can grab dinner in Sonoma Square before heading back to the city. The Girl & the Fig is popular - go early or make a reservation.
EAST BAY
My guess is you probably won't make it over to the East Bay, but if you do, hit up the areas around Berkeley. The views from the deck at the Claremont Hotel, Treasure Island, as well as from Berkeley Marina are nice as well.

Oh man... I fly in on Saturday! I will fly out on Tuesday Morning.... kevin, we need to meet up... I will be with my wife and her family! Ugh...
What time do you fly in on Saturday?
Game starts at 1PM... appropriate "pre-gaming" starts before that.
I don't know if you can get away on your first day... it will be an environment that will most likely be anathema to your wife's family... lol.
Interesting, I didn't know you got married! Grats, Mark!
I'm sure we can kick it Sunday or Monday for a bit, too.
Still, you should visit the more "scenic" parts of the Bay!
