Front windshield crack. Posting for a friend.
So my friend's G35 coupe has a crack on the front windshield. The crack is on the outside. You cannot feel it if you run your fingers on it, but you can feel it if you run across it with your nails. You can't feel anything at all from the inside. I can't figure out what it is. He thinks somebody keyed it, but the scratch/crack looks too thin to be a key. My other friend thinks someone took a knife to it, but little shavings of glass would have been apparent. I think some pressure was just put on the glass and the crack formed.
Are any of these correct? He's wondering what happened and also how much it would cost to get it fixed if anybody has ever done it. Also please recommend a shop. =D
Pics to come soon. Its about a foot long.

none of the above. a small rock chip that u might not have noticed has created this massive crack. if u google it around u'll see that this is common and that's how those windshield repairers advertise for their business, saying that if u dont fix those rock chips in ur windshield it WILL become a long crack.
i got it in my DD but that's nothing to worry about, it's not like the windshield is going to shatter and break. other than it looks bad, im pretty sure there is no safety issue
oh btw.. i actually saw the crack appear right before my eyes while i was driving. it was pretty crazy, like witnessing an earthquake in ur windshield lOL

That's what I thought at first. But everyone was telling me to STFU because they said a rock can't do that lol. I began to believe them because I started to look for a indent where a rock would hit, but there really is none. The line is uniform all throughout. No variation in width or sign of an impact. Which is why I thought someone/something put massive pressure on it and it just cracked.

Just know that having a crack that size, or any size for that matter, is a citable offense, because it IS a safety issue.
CVC 26710 states the following:
It is unlawful to operate any motor vehicle upon a highway
when the windshield or rear window is in such a defective condition
as to impair the driver's vision either to the front or rear.
In the event any windshield or rear window fails to comply with
this code the officer making the inspection shall direct the driver
to make the windshield and rear window conform to the requirements of
this code within 48 hours. The officer may also arrest the driver
and give him notice to appear and further require the driver or the
owner of the vehicle to produce in court satisfactory evidence that
the windshield or rear window has been made to conform to the
requirements of this code.
A G35Driver member's family owns Lotus Glass off of N 10th St in San Jose. Perhaps you should call them for a quote on repairs.
