Depending on where in Big Sur you want to get to, I would estimate about an hour drive. It's only about 40 miles, but its all twisties. Julia pfeiffer waterfall is absolutely beautiful. You should definitely check that out if you get a chance. I have actually walked on that beach, even though you aren't supposed to be able to get to it. Thinking back its probably one of the most dangerous and stupid things i have done, however its in the past and it was awesome at the time.
