How to get a G35 Coupe
How to get a G35 Coupe
Hey, seems like I'm one of the very few Oregonians on this board...
Anyway, just wanted to let all of you folks who are looking for a G35 know about an option you can pursue if you can't get what you want here in Portland.
I wanted to buy a G35C. Unfortunately, while Beaverton Infiniti had some G35C's, they didn't have the combination I wanted. I checked Washington also. No dice.
So, what did I do? I started calling dealers in California. Yup, you can buy your car in California, have it shipped up here, and you DON'T HAVE TO PAY CALIFORNIA SALES TAX. Yes, that's right, NO SALES TAX. However, you do have to pay for shipping. And no, you can't just go down there and drive it up. To do that, you would have to get it registered and licensed in California - which would then force you to pay sales tax.
Bottom line - I got the car I wanted, and I didn't pay sales tax. =)

Sounds like an ingenious way to get what you want at the price you want! I think if you register in CA, then use the car in OR (or any other state) you have to re-register the car in that state so you're paying double registration.

Re: How to get a G35 Coupe
tec, I would think the problem would be going the other way. From what I understand, CA has the stricter emissions laws, so bringing a OR car in and trying to register it would be more difficult. I don't know for sure, but that is what I remember when researching the issue several years ago.

Re: How to get a G35 Coupe
California has the strictest emissions requirements in the US. So any California-compliant (CARB-compliant) automobile will meet emissions requirements in any other state.
Bottom line - not a problem.

Re: How to get a G35 Coupe
Occasionally it does, but I haven't seen too many new cars come out that have different HP ratings. Used to be (maybe 8-10 years ago) that CA certified cars had 5-10 less HP. It could be that everything is shipping with CA standard emission equipment, but I'm not positive.

Thanks for the information. I remember when I was researching VW's, they had emission specs for CA and New England states but don't recall specific states. I was pissed because the car options I wanted were on cars going to CA. One guy in AZ had a car shipped from CA to him because of that. I've never seen mention about HP differences. Didn't know if it was a non-issue or makers didn't want to make a case of it. ...dean

The G35 is 50 state emissions compliant - so there is no special version just for California. Ergo, Coupes sold in California have the same (and *are* the same) as Coupes sold in other states.

Re: How to get a G35 Coupe
Chaster -- I did exactly what you're talking about. I moved back to Portland in January after 10 years in SoCal. I placed my order for a 2004 coupe with Arnold Tijerina (formerly of Riverside Infiniti, now with Infiniti of Tacoma) last October, knowing I was moving up here in January. My timing ended up being perfect, as the car arrived in town a week after I did.
Here's the way it worked: I put down a $500 deposit with my order in October (for their November allocation). When the car arrived at Riverside Infiniti in January, Arnold called and told me, then had the paperwork overnighted to me. I overnighted him back a certified check (I paid MSRP) along with the signed paperwork, and the car was on a truck to me the afternoon he got the check (with all the original protective plastic in place). Apparently you used to be able to buy a one-way trip permit to drive a car out of state for registration, but that isn't allowed anymore.
Registration was pretty easy as well, but I paid cash for my car, so I'm not sure how it works if there's a bank involved. Riverside Infiniti had to send a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) for the car directly to my local DMV (this part took a few extra days). Once they had that, I just had to fill out my title application, give my insurance info, and pay the registration fee.
All in all, it worked out great for me. I got to order exactly the G I wanted, paid no sales tax, and it showed up a week after I arrived in town. Shipping cost me about $500, which was more than offset by not paying sales tax and not having to deal with Beaverton Infiniti and their $1400 "Northwest Protection Package" BS.
