Help in Seattle

I'm going to be in Seattle for a couple of days for an interview. If I get the job I'm going to need a place to stay. Could someone who lives in Seattle let me know about good apartments and areas to live? Thanks.

Re: Help in Seattle

It kind of depends on where you will be working, how much you're willing to pay vs. how long you're willing to drive. You should check places like www.apartments.com. One of the nicer apartments I've lived in is in Newcastle. But it wasn't cheap.

Re: Help in Seattle

Sorry I didn't give more information before, but I just got some more. It seems that if I were to get the job I would be working near the intersection of routes 90 and 5. I'd like the drive to be 15 minutes or less. It's hard to say how much I'm willing to pay without knowing how much the company is going to pay me, but I currently pay about $700 for my apartment in St. Louis so I should be able to afford something in between $700 and $900. Thanks.

Re: Help in Seattle

Cost of living in Seattle is probably considerably higher than St Louis, so you might want to take that into consideration. I turned down a job in the Seattle area, because I couldn't find any houses that I liked that were comparable to what I have now, in a reasonable price range.

Are you willing to forgo your 15 minute commute tho? I have a friend that lives in Ballard, which is off 99, north of the Space Needle. It's about in the price range you said, but I think it's probably a good 30 minutes from the 5/90, with traffic.

Re: Help in Seattle

Using one of the online Salary/CostOfLiving calcs (search Google), it says Seattle costs 12% more to live than in St. Louis. So if you're not getting more than 15% raise (preferrably 20%), then it might not be worth it to move (unless you like the NW). You can search www.apartments.com to see what places are within your price range and if it's within your distance of travel.

Re: Help in Seattle

Thanks for all your help.

I have taken into consideration cost of living and I do have a salary that they should offer me in mind. What I'm trying to do is find a place that I'd like to live in to see if that salary really will get me by. Also, since I don't know the area it's kind of hard trying to figure out how long it will take me to get from one place to another.

I might be willing to drive more than 15 minutes, if I had a good reason to do so.

Re: Help in Seattle

It's hard to say what is best for you. What I would recommend is going to www.apartments.com and find a place within your budget and within your distance. Since you're not familiar with the area (and I don't know what you need in terms of area, Renton is cheaper, but more getto (certain areas), Newcastle/Bellevue is nicer, but more expensive, I would get a 6 month lease and then decide where to "permanently" move to.

Check out Shorewood Heights on Mercer Island. About 5 miles east of the 5/90 intersection. ShorewoodHeights.com is the web address. I've been here almost three years, am back and forth to Seattle various hours of the day and the drive is usually pretty good.
