Buying out of State?

Anyone have any info for buying in Cali? Sales tax, shipping costs, use tax, registration, paperwork, etc... and bring it up to WA?

Re: Buying out of State?

From what I've read; $4-500 shipping, sales tax will be keyed off your home address. One guy had the shipping charges offset with the price of the car. A place in AZ charged a couple hundred for paperwork on an out of state deal.

For me it was tempting but the car is just too hot and I didn't want too many Joe's gassing it. I figured it was probably going to be the hardest 10-20 miles put on the car. If I were to do it, with airfare so low, I'd fly down and work off some of the break-in miles driving back. But remember, no cruise control !! ...dean

No cruise? Is that something I'll glean from reading the manual?

What about emissions? Do CA cars have antismog devices that I need to worry about?

Re: Buying out of State?

I bought my car from a dealer in Cali (Marin Infiniti) and had it shipped up here to Oregon. It cost me $700 for shipping (ouch). But I got what I wanted and I didn't pay some ridiculous $1500 markup either.

If you choose to drive your car up, be aware that you will have to pay California Tax (8.xx%?) since you will be taking ownership of the car in California.

The person who said "no cruise" meant that you shouldn't drive the car using cruise control during the break in period because you should try to vary engine rpms during the break in period. Driving under cruise control would keep the engine at the same speed for a long time...

And to answer your final question, the G35 Coupe is 50 state emissions compliant, so the California G35's are exactly the same as in the other states. No special versions for Cali..

Hope that was helpful,

Chaster

If I buy the car in Cali... and have it shipped to my door... then all I should have to pay is licence fees for Washington? I did not buy it here so I should not have to pay sales tax for here? Anyone ? I can save a little more than 3k.. on this approach.

You will have to pay WA sales tax no matter where you buy the car from. There's no escape.

Yeah I figured as much... oh well if it costs me $600 more to have the car I want in June versus September then so be it... thanks!

Re: Buying out of State?

Ok, none of this info was found of the WA DOT web site so I emailed them. What they told me was I would have to pay CA sales tax but I don't have to register with them, I can get a 3 day permit and drive the car away. Then when I get to WA, I just show my paperwork that shows I already paid sales tax in CA which will be credited to my "use tax" which is charged to cars which were bought out of state. So I don't pay a WA sales tax since I didn't buy in WA, but I pay a use tax instead. But since I already paid CA sales tax and it's around the same percentage I think, then it cancels each other out.

HOWEVER, if you bought in Oregon, paid no tax, and registered it there and actually drove it around down there for over 90 days and can prove it, then you don't have to pay use tax.

I am definitely going to go the CA route since I'm not into tax evasion, I'm just into saving $3k off of MSRP.

Nice find on the info sonofsnood... I am going to go the CA route as well.. not sure about saving from MSRP.. but i can have the car in maybe a month. There are like 15 dealerships in the LA area.. so they get mass alocations... I don't want to drive mine back so I am still having it shipped by truck... Good Luck to ya...

Nice to hear that both of you will be able to get your cars sooner rather than later. Hopefully I will be able to join the club in late July.

Re: Buying out of State?

I just put my deposit down on my Silver 6MT sedan. Expecting a July/Aug delivery. Arnold at Riverside, CA quoted it at $500 over invoice. I've been searching for about 6 weeks now and this is the cheapest I've found it.

How much are you being charged for shipping?

Re: Buying out of State?

$600-800, but I'm not shipping it, I'm flying down there for $200 (wife is coming along), then driving over to Vegas using my new nav, stay somewhere on the strip for 2 nights, then drive back (again using Nav) all for less than the cost of shipping
