They dont have their own network their, but they still sell their product. And did you not hear about the 9 year old chinese kid that made a popular iphone app. China doesnt have AT&T....how did he get the iphone?? They are mainly only locked in the states. The U.S. is their biggest market, so yet, they would never sell locked ones in the U.S., as im sure they are getting lots of money from AT&T for exclusivity.
I'm pulling out my BS flag. I live in Japan and own 2 Japanese iPhone 3G's on the Softbank network. They are officially locked (got one from the Apple Store in Shibuya, the other from Softbank). Thanks to iPhone dev team it is now unlocked (yellowsn0w), but by Apple standards it's locked. Also, you couldn't use the old 2.5G iphones, because Japan doesn't use GSM and haven't for years. Trust me, I moved back here with my 2.5G iphone. (lived here before from 00-05) I sold it so I could get my 3G (wife got hers the day after it was released, saying I already had one ). Also, no iPhone works on AU, or e-mobile's phone towers, so your other statement is wrong as well.

This is the official listing of locked and unlocked iphones. If someone claims they have an official unlcoked phone, ask for the model number, and refer to this (iPhone 3G is not a model number).
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

Phones that should be unlocked on purchase are from these countries.
Belgium, Czech rep, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Luxembourg, Macau, New Zealand, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey (depending on where you buy it?), and UAE.

Beware, just because someone says they bought a phone in Hong Kong doesn't mean it is officially unlocked. I looked around and had checked several supposedly unlocked iphones and they had Ireland model #'s. I checked it in the store on my Japanese iphone. Once I told them it was BS they pulled out a Turbo Sim style card lolz. All this for $700 USD, no thanks!

Sorry for the rant. My Rebel XT just got soaked in water and is now dead so I'm already irritated

Ouch...sorry to hear about that Rebel XT man. The iphone thing was what was told to me last march at the akihabara apple store. They said I could use the 3G iphone on softbank, docomo, or AU. But my point was that to think that iphones are not sold unlocked for use in different countries is crazy. Apples gonna make that money wherever they can...haha

Ok guys, so let me tell you about my experience with this seller from about 8 months ago. I will try to be as UNBIASED as possible without slandering the seller.

So around September, the seller posted a Tmobile Sidekick on another forum for $125. I agreed to buy it from him, and paypaled immediately. I never got the phone, and filed a paypal dispute against the seller. Unfortunantly, I only got $65 back from paypal, and was owed another $60 from the seller.

So I emailed him, and he said ok, i'll send a money order to your adderss. Weeks later, no money order, and since it was only $60, I kinda didn't feel like PMing him more and just accepted it as a lost. 2 Months later, he PMed me again, asking for my address again saying he will just mail out a money order. No money order again. Last month he asked for my address AGAIN, saying he just sent out another money order couple days ago, and just wanted to make sure the address was right.

No money order again...So he emails me couple days ago askin gme to send him abill on paypal for $60. I do that, and last week i received the $60 that was owed to me. All in all, it took about 8 months for everything to be straightened out.

So with that said... deal with this sell if you want, but be weary.

Now it makes sense. That was before the official phone/deals were made. Apple was pitching the 3G to both Softbank and Docomo. Docomo wanted to redesign the user interface to match theirs and to run iMode. In the end apple passed and went to Softbank. AU is technically impossible as they use CDMA-2000 (Ev-Do) technology and not HSDPA. Both are a flavor of 3G but go about it in different ways and frequencies.

That sucks. Looks like this guy has been on the forums for a while. Makes it hard to trust anyone, right. Hope it all works out for you.

According to his profile, he was on Driver yesterday, but he hasn't posted anything since the middle of March.
