worst day ever

ok so today i decided to put in my stechs. the back ones were cake... it took me about 20 minutes for the first one and about 10 for the second one. then i got to the front. holy sh**. it took me 3 hours just to get the first one back in. it took me 5 hours to do the other... AND THEN i hit a wall. both struts do not tighten at the top.. the way i did it was i compressed the front springs with a jack and then tighten them from the strut tower in the engine bay. and then i felt that the bolts wouldnt tighten... WTF!! so i take it out for a test drive and the shocks come into the engine bay and make horrendous noise and are not tightened at all in the engine bay how come there is no plate that gets thelugs to tighten once they get on the thread of the bolts?? i cant even drive my car home tonight.. im soo confused.. someone help!!

yeah i used a spring compressor. i thought about it.. and the only other thing could be is that the metal rod from the strut is spinning with the nut at the top???? why would this happen and how can i fix it?
