First question would be...why is the valentine Radar units so popular and so expensive?
Does it realy make a difference if i buy a cobra,esscort,vanentine...
whats the difference in the $150 esscouts and the $400 Valentines?
Also how well do radar detectors work? I have never owned one..

I have been a loyal Escort fan boy for the last 25 years. HOWEVER, my next RD will be a V1. I cringe at the price, but I will buy it. Why? The last FOUR 8500's I have had ALL circumed to the "Service Required" problem. I don't know why, maybe the Hot South Texas Sun did it, but they all went bad within two years. The SR message will come on and I turn the unit off and give it a good whack and it will go off for a week or so, then it comes right back.

Great quote BTW....

Yes you can get caught with ANY radar detector, all he has to do is sit over the hill with it off and then nail you when you top the hill. Happened to YoungTurk at the year before last Raging Bull Texas Stampede, 96 in a 55. He got out of it though, wonder of wonders.

valentine v1, escort 8500 and 9500 are the only 3 detectors i recommend.

i have the 8500 and love it. if i had the choice of the 3, id stick with my 8500. v1 has more false alarms and 9500 gps seems like it would be more dangerous.

my first 8500 got the "service required" and i just sent it in for a replacement.

its all about the arrows....those to me are what set the v1 apart from the rest of the competition.

Yes it makes a difference, but the V1 isn't the only acceptable detector. you can also buy a BelRx65 or Escort 8500 they all have about the same ratings and detection length. Buy a cheap one and you will quickly see the difference.
