The job market in the Oil and Gas business is booming. We cannot find any one to take the programming and software testing positions in my company. It is very tight and we are being treated pretty well.
I wish I had some programming experience. Ive thought about changing majors to something more oil industry minded b/c the positions are really opening up. I need to finish my current degree and get a real job again so I can save up some money.
Yup +1 on the Oil and Gas, we (Shell) are on a hiring spree for the technical roles, so good opportunities for EE, ChemE, Geophysicts, Geology, MechE. There is not as much a demand for programmers though cuz its all outsourced, but systems analysts still get hired. Job market is pretty good for finance/accounting in Houston also.

Companies are ALWAYS looking for good sales guys, especially in the tech sector. I was in network security the last 4 years and we were hiring non stop - it usually takes 8-10 new hires to get one sales guy good enough to make it into the field. If you can make it, they pay a lot. I am not sure where you are located, but if you are interested and have some experience pm me, I have contacts with security companies and providers all over the US.

It's true that software is being outsourced, but the industry has come to the realization that it isn't going to offset the demand for software positions through the next decade. Most career sites have software pegged as in the top 3 in terms of growth, often being number 1.
They're already calling it Web 2.0 - the second dot com boom. And I can attest that it is already happening in California. I just received a 55% pay increase by jumping companies (from Northrop Grumman to the Los Angeles Times in software). I only have 2 years full time experience (and another as an intern). I posted my resume on Dice about two months ago and was getting about 3-6 requests for interviews a day (my other colleagues were as well, before they jumped shipped to companies like eBay, Disney, and Earthlink respectively). Places like Napster and UCLA Medical Center were giving me offers on the spot. If you have software skills, it's as good a time as ever, and it's not going to change drastically, even with all the outsourcing. Software is definitely hot right now.
