Hurricane preparation!

Hurricane preparation!
Things are not looking good if you're in southern Florida; it looks like this hurricane could be coming straight at us. I live in north Broward and don't have a garage (covered parking only), so I am trying to figure out how I can best protect the G. I might stay here or I might try to drive far, far away, but even then, it doesn't look like there would be many safe places to go from here and I worry about everybody else trying to do the same and getting stuck in traffic. Anyone have any suggestions? LOL

Re: Hurricane preparation!
andrew survivor here too....
my suggestion is put the car in a parking garage on the second floor( no flooding) and closest to the center of the garage as possible.... or wrap the car in bubble wrap..... DO NOT put car covers on, they will be gone and end up scratching the paint through the flapping in the wind.....
If you would like to contribute to my "FI Fund" please make PAYPAL payment to "yakko1zzz@aol.com"... Thanks

Re: Hurricane preparation!
I'm here in Melbourne which is exactly between Jax and Miami on the Florida coast line and everyone is going nuts. I waited in line for an hour on Monday around 4pm to get plywood. Some people shopping today didn't get any. Plywood is $16 for a 4'x8' sheet! What happened to $4 from Dec?? I had to go to three gas stations to find one that still had 93 octane, first two places had 87 only. Patrick Air Force Base is closing Thursday afternoon, since its on an island with Cape Canaveral, I'm sure they will recommend everyone to leave.
Even with boarded up windows, at 140+ mph winds, I'll be heading out to Fort Myers / Naples and surprise visit some friends there (if path models still shows hitting coastline and going up). Most houses here are only spec'ed up to 140, and that's if its a new home. Last time we evac was in Sept 99 for Floyd and we (and the other 450K county residents) decided to leave about 24 hours early. The traffic was so bad heading inland that we didn't get out of the county for four hours. If anyone is deciding to leave, do it as soon as possible. I know of a few neighbors leaving tonight to avoid the conjestion.
Tips: If you want a hotel room, call ahead or go online and reserve it. Don't expect to be able to walk in on Thursday night and get one. People who choose not to board up their houses, even if it was because there was no materials left, may not get their homes covered for hurricane damages. Trim the palm trees, bushes and whatever else around your house. It takes minutes to cut branches down, it takes all day to pick up a 40ft palm tree and put it back in place. If you have a video cam or even a reg. camera, take pictures of everything in and out of your home for claims against water damage or looting. I highly recommend leaving town about 2am instead of 5am if your going to wait til the end.
Prepare early and play it safe everyone.

Re: Hurricane preparation!
I am an Andrew survivor as well. I dont think my house can go thru another Cat. 4/5 Hurricane. I am really considering leaving, but dont know where to go, If I go up north I might be heading right into it. But my car is already damaged from an attempt to steal my HIDs, so im going to leave it in the garage and so be it, I have an open insurance claim as we speak. Goodluck everyone.
The lastest pictures have it coming down south a little more but still seems to be heading north.

Re: Hurricane preparation!
Putting your cars and even staying in a parking garage is a great idea. There was a study a few months back, and they found that parking garages are very safe places during a hurricane just FYI incase of an emergency. Just don't park on the first floor, you may get water coming in.
Well I've got an extra room in my house, and our house is build like a fortress she survived andrew without a scratch, and I'm hoping all goes well if Frances hits us. I just hope its lost all its strength before it crosses florida and hits the tampa area again. Lots of folks without homes and a Cat 1 will still push around plenty of debris.

Re: Hurricane preparation!
Some of you might find it helpful to round up your friends and family to rent an RV. This would be especially helpful to those with special circumstances. Reserving it now will at least give you some shelter if the worse happens or have a way to keep your beer cold at the very least.
