Well it happened....

In an earlier report I posted about the theft of headlight housings on the rise in southern florida. Well these blatant dickwads did it to my car this evening. They stole my passenger side light housing and in the process did a wonderful job on my front right quarter and bumper. At least they coulda been slick about it and pop it out cleanly... [censored] if you're gonna do something do it fckin right.

Anyhow, just wondering what kind of damages am I looking at?
1 Light Housing
1 Front quarter panel passenger side needs to be repaired or replaced,
1 bumper (assuming they just replace the entire bumper) in which case I might as well get something nice haha..

Will the insurance company work with my dealership on repairs?

Thanks for your help in advance....

A bummed out G35 Owner,
Greg

Re: Well it happened....

Greg,
Sorry to hear about your car. Each insurance company is different on how they handle repairs. Some will just come up with a number of what they think it would cost to do the repairs and give you a check for that number. Others will have you take your car to "their" repair shops and then just pay them for the repairs. Be wary of the later option, the ins. company repair shops often use shoddy material and less than competent repair techniques.

Call your ins. company and ask them these questions. You can often fight them if they don't handle things the way you want.

Good luck,
Jeff

Re: Well it happened....

Thanks PlatG,

Yeah my insurance company told me to take it to thier "certified" technitian to get an estimate. I'd really appreciate it if they worked with the infiniti dealership on this one. I feel that the work would be done right with infiniti if that was the case.

Inifniti wont help with this type of damage under warranty?

Are there other options, other than just the insurance?

Re: Well it happened....

not unless you have a "theft" coverage with Infiniti...

You do have the option of taking the vehicle to any place you want to have the work done. You do NOT have to go to your insurance companies recommended place. Often times the ins. co. will tell you their place gives a lifetime warranty on the repair, so what. If it's done right the first time, who needs a lifetime warranty. Plus, most body shops offer the same lifetime warranty. Go to the Insurance adjustor, let him/her see your car and get their estimate. Go to Infiniti and tell them to give you an estimate for the repair. If Infiniti's estimate is higher, they'll call the adjustor our to the dealership and have them look at the damage again. Infiniti and your insurance co. will come to an agreement.

Trust me, I've been through this BS before. DO NOT let the insurance companies recommended repair place TOUCH your car...

Well I got hit a few weeks ago. I had damage to the bumper, fender, hood, and housing. My total was about 1600 bucks. I feel the same way you do, if they are going to take them at least do it right. Sorry about that. Goodluck.

and if worse comes to worse...the estimate the insurance companies gives u can be paid out in cash then you can take it to the dealership. Its better to get insurance to agree to infiniti's price but if not, may be better to eat a little to have the right people working on it, not to mention right paint!!

Re: Well it happened....

Well I took care of everything today, and damage estimates came in at 2,050 with labor and all.

As far as how it happened, I was at the Florida International Univ. Apartment Parking lot, "studying" with a friend of mine.

I hate to say it but I had a feeling it was going to happen too. I don't know if I was just paranoid or what, but I did park the car a little further than usual, thinking about other damage (dings etc).

What it seemed they did was pry it out very harshly. Its not a clean process by any means. They didn't break the housing clamps or the radiator frame, but they did bend back a part of the fender and did a number on the bumper to get the light housing out.

So now it brings me to my new point..... Electro shock protection around the housing of the light. Touch the light you get shocked... 10k volts enough?

Who's in?
