Fishing In So Cal
Fishing In So Cal
Hey guys,
I love fishing but I am an ubernoob when it comes to fishing. I fished off of the pier and the san pedro boat fishing. I liked the boat fishing and I was wondering if there was better options? I know sport fishing is mexico is crazy but I would prefer something closer?
TIA

fishing is great. its a great sport to get away from things.
the last fishing trip i went beside catalina is to some island an hr away from catalina. i forgot what the island is called but its deserted, litterally nothing there but damn fishing is great there. best fishing ive experience.
have u tried charter fishing? thats great too but your only limited to 10 fish person.

Only fishing I've done is at the lakes. My 4 year old son catches more fish than I do though. Last time he caught 5 fish and I didn't catch anything. Now we wait for his Poppa to come and visit and he takes him fishing. Of course his pole broke a little bit and he keeps telling his poppa that daddy didn't fix his pole yet. I hate fishing!

I usually work with 976-Tuna to get some kids out fishing each year. If i do a boat this year, I'll post up.
Check Phil's website and see when his next charter is. You can't beat that group; they're a great bunch. 976tuna.com
Any time you go fishing you have limits! Locally, the only thing you are going to pull 10+ anyway are mackies and perch.

we should set up a G-Fishing meet.
i haven't gone fishing in a loooooooooooong time.
i used to hit up Irvine Lake a few years back when they stocked it with trout.
rent a boat and just take it out for the whole day.
caught a big-*** catfish there once.
had to fight with it for 20 minutes.
Anyone else interested?
Definitely something different.

There are many places to fish off of So Cal, but it is probably best to fish on one a boat from one of the local landings.
Off the pier or jetties your chances of catching a edible fish is slim, maybe a halibut if your lucky, but usually just small perch and white croaker(tomcod). You can also catch small sand sharks but they are too usually to small to eat.
Prelude555 the island you are talking about is probably San Nicolas Island. Fished there a few time and like you mentioned, "nothing but fish!" Only problem is this place isn't always opened to fishing as the military owns it, limiting the fishing oppertunities there. Few of the local boats go out there.
Best bet is probably San Diego during Albacore season! I've been lucky and caught 5 albabcore (all 30-40 pounds), 2 yellow fin (30pounds) and 2 dorado (15 pounds) on an overnight trip! I've also gone on 2 and 2.5 day trips and caught 1 or two fish.
Word of caution, don't take your G to the local landing if you go fishing! I use to fish every other weekend out of Long Beach Sport Fishing or Pierpoint landing, and at least every other month you would return to cars being broken into, stolen, etc.
Once I went on a local trip and this guy probably spent $200 on his wife and two kids to fish. The fishing was extremely slow he caught 1-2 fish, his wife and kids were sick in the galley. Guess what he returned to?
His Scion TC on railroad ties! They had taken his rims and tires, radio, sub box, etc! Next to his car were two-three other cars missing radios and with broken windows.
Thiefs know that if you park in these landing you are probably going to be out on a boat for 6-10 hours! I've done less fishing since I got my G for this reason!. Now I wait till a friend is willing to drive to go fishing.
I would be down for a G35 charter!

Has anyone tried fishing from the shore? I have been doing this (on and off) for the past 15 years - primarily during the summer. I usually go during the time of year when you can catch sandrabs (where the water meets the shore). During this time, various fish and sharks come close to shore to feed. None of the fish that I catch I keep - put them back in the water.
The cool thing is that you never know what you are going to catch. Some of the fish is pretty decent (about 1.5 feet long).
I also have been going to Big Bear Lake - trout and carp.
If anyone is interested, let me know.

I smell a bet brewing...
Irvine Lake was a nice little getaway.

Check it out.
They apparently have a group rate, too.
I smell a fishy meet. LOL!
