Question for those who have gotten keyed

My friend's sedan got keyed the other day. There is a deep line from the passenger front door all the way to the whole back door. I've been going around and getting estimates and have been quoted ~$600.. They said that they would have to remove the two doors, sand it down, and repaint the whole doors again.

I'm just a little skeptical about this because it seems like a lot just to remove a thin line, I might be wrong and wanted to know what you guys did and what shop you brought it to. thanks!

If it is keyed deeply enough they will have to sand and repaint the entire panel, especially if it's difficult paint to match like many of the G's paints are.

One possible avenue is to go through insurance if your deductible is low enough - my friend's old 328ci was keyed badly, and the cost to repair it was outrageous (something over $2K), so he filed an insurance claim, paid his deductible, and got the work done.

Imagine taking a can of paint in a similar color to the car and spraying only where the car was keyed... that's why they paint the entire door panel.

I doubt they have to take the doors off. but they do have to re-paint and blend the paint from the 2 doors into the rear quarter panel and fender, possibly along with the a-pillar and rear section of the roof.

Once they get past the clear and down to the paint there is no other way to fix it besides repainting.

My Buddy did a 7 series that had some major keying done to it and had to go as far as the rear bumper to "blend " in the paint.

call TJ from Chips Away... he does miracles! No lie!!!... I had a huge, deep scrape on my trunk from an a-hole that apparently used a screwdriver to steal my emblem... TJ worked his magic and you would never know there was ever a scratch!

He uses an airbrush and blends/polishes till it looks new. He has several accounts in Newport @ Lexus, Mercedes, BMW - but usually will try to do stuff like this in his spare time... His number is: 714-350-6070 - let him know Mike Riggs referred you.
