ANAHEIM (KABC) -- A suspect accused of shooting an officer was shot and killed by police on the 91 Freeway in Anaheim early Monday.
Two Anaheim police officers had responded to a hotel on Harbor Boulevard near Disneyland after reports of a man exposing himself to children Sunday morning.
When officers arrived, the suspect fired at them, hitting one officer in the leg. The suspect then fled. The man believed to have shot the Anaheim police officer was spotted driving on the eastbound 91 Freeway shortly after midnight on Monday. Police pursued the suspect, who refused to stop, and the chase ended when he crashed into another car near the Brookhurst Street exit.
"He was driving at such a high rate of speed he couldn't slow down," said Sgt. Tim Schmidt from the Anaheim Police Department.
Schmidt said after the collision, the suspect got out of his car with a handgun in the middle of the freeway and took cover around other vehicles stopped on the freeway. After a confrontation with police, the suspect was shot and killed.
Witnesses said there was a lot of gunfire. "We thought it was a traffic accident until, like, 30 cop cars came, coming on my left-hand, right-hand sides," said Isileli Vunileva, who witnessed the incident. "Then once it broke, everyone jumped up and then bam -- everybody started shooting, and I heard at least six or seven round."
"We were driving, and all of a sudden I heard all the sirens," said Pamula Topper, another witness. "Then I seen the car swerve over and hit this one car here, and then I heard, like, a whole bunch of gunshots."
A female motorist was hit by stray bullets. Police were unsure if she was hit by police or suspect bullets. She was rushed to a local hospital and may be released later Monday.
Police said they are certain the suspect in the shooting incident in Anaheim was the same man who allegedly exposed himself to children at a hotel.
The 91 Freeway was reopened at about 9:20 a.m., but the investigation is ongoing.
