Hands-free Only

Well after about a year of all this bluetooth talk its finally happening...

As of July 1, motorists age 18 and older may talk on a wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle only if they use a hands-free device. The second law prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from using a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a moving vehicle.

The base fine for a first offense is $20, $50 for subsequent offenses, and with the addition of penalty assessment, fines can grow to more than triple the base amount. Violation of the new laws will be a reportable offense, but the California Department of Motor Vehicles will not assign a point to the violator's record.

More importantly.. if they have to enforce this law by looking through windows... does it mean they're going to be a lot more strict on TINTS?!?! O_O

seat belt is either u wear it or not. Cellphones are going to be very tricky since the law doesn't state u can not hold a cellphone. It says u can not hold it to ur ear. There will be lots of trials for the little $50 fine in the future and that will make the state lose more money by overflowing the courts than actually making any money off of the fines.
Just my thought. IMO Just ban cellphone using when ur driving PERIOD! No texting, no talking even with hands free device, NO fvckin cellphones period. If u need to make a call, pull over and do so.

^^Yeah I agree. The law seems to stupid if you can text while driving, but not hold it up to your ear. If they are going to ban the use of phone, do it all the way. Not just partially.

The fines are really cheap. I think the fine is at least $75 in D.C. and in NY. $20 is no deterrent for me. It's like somebody attempted to pass a law but made so many concessions to the point that the law isn't even effective.

Law enforcement while acting in their course of duty is exempt from this law. Don't knock on this because honestly we use our cell phones to coordinate plans and doing so over the air (radio) is not an option.

This law is funny, isn't txting more of a hazard than talking on a cell phone, i mean, like klubbheads said, if they are gonna ban talking on the phone, they should of just banned phone use from the get go
