Just picked up an H&K P2000 9mm. Chose the 9 rather than a .40/.45 because I was concerned about the wife being able to handle it. Handgun purchases in CA require succesful completion of the Handgun Safety Certificate test. IIRC, it's 30 questions. See the study guide HERE. Test was easy and can be taken at most gun dealers including Turner's Outdoorsman. Also 10-day waiting period for handguns.

You want a .22 and a .45 caliber handgun? IMO...the two are very extremely far apart handguns in terms of firepower. You're basically going from a pea shooter to a mini canon. If this is your first time shooting, rent a .22 so you can get the feel of a firearm but moreso the accuracy. Then when it seems like you're getting the accuracy down, move up to the 9mm. More recoil but it's a nice entry level gun. You might want to try out the Beretta 92. It's a very user friendly firearm.

If you're in the market for a shotty, the Mossberg 500 is a decent shotgun at a very affordable price. I myself have a Remington 870, 18" barrel with 7 shot capacity...loaded with slugs only. Purchased my shotty from Turners for $175 but don't expect it at the price. In-store savings and manufacter rebate knocked it down that low.

This is my latest and my carry gun, I pack it with Federal Hydrashock +P ammo. Has the way cool "CrimsonTrace" laser sight grips.

S&W 642 Lightweight, 38 cal, SS bbl, SS cyl, CT grips, +P capable

This is my other carry gun, however it does not have the laser grips in this pic.

Ruger P91, 40 S&W, alum frame, SS slide, 10 rd mags.

After using the Crimson Trace grips for a while now, I can highly recommend them. The "deterrent factor" alone is worth the money. However, the ability to shoot in a compromised position and no problems with sight acquisition are big selling points. On top of all that, they can be used as a training aid. They will show you how good or bad your trigger technique is. You won't believe how much your POA changes as you cycle a DA trigger. It won't take long to learn the proper way of separating the movement of the trigger finger from the movement of the hand/arm.
