Be aware! Things you need to know before purchasing bumpers

hey guys,

today, I just wanna share few things about purchasing aftermarket bumpers.

But before I get into that let me tell you little bit about my story:
I purchased an aftermarket front bumper from this forum, and DTM did paint and installation on end of August 2010. It took few days to complete and when I picked up my car, I was just happy. But few weeks later, I noticed a wave in the upper part of the bumper(right under the grill). I touched the part where it was waved and realized how thin that particular area was. According to Strafe, these polyurethane bumpers are well known for the material being stretched by heat, thus cause a warp. I'm pretty sure it came out like that from the bodyshop but since I don't have any proof, let's just say heat from sunlight did this. First thing I can say is, I wouldn't have bought a bumper that cost me 800 bucks in total for part, prep, and paint, if I knew the bumper would warp by the sun after few weeks. Strafe says, they can't tell every consumer that their polyurethane bumpers will warp from sun heat after few weeks. So I wouldn't like to argue with them anymore because they tell me such story with their huge confidence(that it's not their problem, but something that buyers should've already known).

So guys, here are the things you want to look into:
1. when you buy aftermarket bumpers, ask them if it's gonna warp by the sun.
2. ask them to show you some pictures of their products that are installed and painted. (just so you can compare yours to the picture later)
3. ask them if they will give you warranty if your product doesn't look like the ones in their picture.

I don't usually even write these types of threads but I thought I was very unhappy about having a bumper that cost me not 50 bucks, but 800 bucks and have this ugly wave in it. And the bodyshop nor the seller just are telling me the product is like that and they won't cover anything. I will take a few pictures and post them just so you guys have better images of what I'm talking about. When you see my pictures, check and see if any pictures posted on the forum by the seller look anything like mine.

If any of you have similar experiences, please comment

That sucks man. I've read that most bodyshops let the bumper sit in the sun prior to painting it. Did yours do that?

Pretty common problem w/the TopSecret style bumpers, what one did you buy? There are a bunch of ways to fix it. Instead of using the forum to complain about your lack of knowledge, try searching for ways to fix your issue...

but the whole issue with this guy is that he is not only complaining about spending $$$ on a bumper that is of very poor quality, but he also letting others know that arent as familiar with aftermarket parts.

your exactly right, its not my job to explain to every customer about aftermarket parts. 1,000's of inquiries and im supposed to hold their hand through that process?? come on..

i dont mind whatsoever answering ANY questions regarding these parts if the customer asks. We post our disclaimers about these products in EVERY thread we have for a reason.

aside from the above ^ this thread was made FOR A REASON https://g35driver.com/forums/interio...ths-facts.html. VERY VERY good info in that thread. As i told you in PM's, both materials *poly & glass* have their advantages and disadvantages. By you not doing your OWN homework on these parts and NOT asking me any questions about the product is not OUR fault. Next time, you should do some homework on these parts and then decide after reading if these parts are for you.

thats my .02..

you also said you inspected the bumper before driving it off from DTM.. then say you didnt catch it because you dont have sharp eyes?

They would have fixed the problem if you felt there was one. When you picked up the car you must have inspected it no? Everyone has a right to their opinion and if you dont like DTM thats fine. Do know that one simple phone call to us or them would have had this issue resolved a long time ago...

why dont you give them a call:
DTM AUTOBODY
contact: 626.448.0903

ask for David or Mia and explain why your unhappy. i cant promise anything because its been some time between when you got the job done. Wish you the best..

if i remember correctly your bumper is poly, if so, then yes. is there anything else you had a ? about?

I thought to myself that maybe it's already done deal, and usually bodyshops don't cover an aftermarket, specially if it's not ordered by themselves. So I probably just got away with it.

O well, yea I do agree that I could've given them a call already!

This is the first time you tried to contact me in a PM? Sorry just remembered. This is about same time you contacted Dustin. I know Dustin tried to help you. IDK what else he could do but tell you to call DTM. Based on this thread IDK how DTM will feel. I know how we feel right now. It is like you put us on Blast for no reason....Now you want Help? You decide what you would do after a thread like this......

hello

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi
I was looking at some threads and I just found myself interested in asking you something. I purchased a Top Secret style front bumper from Strafe on the forum and took it to DTM where I was recommended. The car was done after few days leaving my car over there, and I was happy. But I noticed this wavey area where the grill is and I was like omg... I was so angry but I thought DTM wouldn't be all that cool with me because it's not that they ordered the bumper for me. It's been several months, but do you think it's worth asking them? any comments would HELP.

John
