Transponder key

So I bought the key off of eBay but the dealership still wants 110 to cut and program. It's not the ikey, it's the appropriate key from 2004. Any suggestions. Ive called a few locksmiths and they wanted 250?!?!?

I have a 2003 G35 coupe and had a few keys made:

Kearney Mesa Infiniti programed a OEM key i had for $65. It was already cut. In and out fast and it worked perfectly.

Also Busy Bees Locks & Keys in San Diego will program and cut it pretty cheap. I think its around $60 or $70 bucks. I had him cut and program a off brand ebay key and it worked great. It will cost you more if he drives to you. I drove to the store down town to save a few bucks.

++++1 on the cut at Home Depot, just make sure they guarantee the cut, otherwise you're out a key. On the programming, you can do it yourself. I bought an uncut key and followed these programming instructions 4 years ago:

Note: The horn chirp can be disable by pressing the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously until the hazard lights flash, and no enable press the lock and unlock until the horn chirp.

To reprogram (enter new ID) key fob (keyless remote controller) follow the steps.

1. Close all doors and lock all doors

2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition key cylinder more than six times within 10 seconds.
(The hazard warning lamp will then flash.)
NOTE: Key should be withdrawn from ignition key cylinder completely each time.

NOTE: Do not rush the insertion/removal key cycling process. The side
marker/tail/license lamps and interior illumination will flash twice when this step is accurately completed.

3. Insert key on ignition key cylinder and turn ignition key switch to "AAC" position . At this time, the new ID code is entered and original (previous) ID codes are erase.

4. Press any button on the new remote controller once. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash)

NOTE: Do not press the button more than one time in the above step. If the button is pressed more than one time, the programming procedure will not be successful. The side marker/tail/license lamps and interior illumination will flash twice when this step is accurately completed and programming is successful.

If there is only one remote controller skip step 5.

5. Additional ID code entry: Release the door lock, then lock again with door lock/unlock switch (In power window main switch)

6. Remove key from ignition

7. Unlock driver side door, open driver side door and then close the door. (END)

NOTE:
If you need to activate more than two additional new remote controllers, repeat the procedure on step 5 "Additional ID code entry" for each new remote controller.

NOTE: Entry of maximum four ID codes is allowed and any attempt to enter more will be ignore.
Good luck and I hope this helps! BTW, I take credit cards, cash or checks!.. and if you're broke, your 1st born (I'm feeling my bio-clock ticking).

He's talking about getting the transponder chip in the key programmed. This is how to program the keyless entry remote. Good info though either way.

If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't require separate programming instructions (mine didn't for my 04 sedan). A blank one designed for the car will work fine. Following the instructions above will perform the entire function... it has for 2 keys we have... am I missing something??

OP... not sure why this is so difficult... I've done it with my 04 sedan after having bought a key off of Ebay and having it cut by a locksmith for $10. The transponder is just an electronic device implanted in the head of a key. It remains inactive until it's initialized by the RF energy that is produced by the ignition lock mechanism. Once the transponder is energized by the ignition system, it transmits a unique Alfa/numeric identity code back to the ignition and from there it travels to the computer where it's matched to certain value codes on the on board computer. If it matches, signals are sent back to the key and it's programmed on the spot. This is all done via a small antenna/coil within the ignition key entry hole.

My suggestion is to experiment by following the instructions I listed above. On my 04 the process was easy, I just followed the above steps exactly, never went to a dealership or elsewhere... and it was with a key off of Ebay ($45).

^^^^^^^You were 100% correct and doing perfect until the last 2 sentences of your first paragraph. The small antenna/coil within the ignition key entry hole can not program keys. The locksmith you had cut the key may have programed the key for you and you didn't know it. Bottom line, your car's ignition can not program key transponder chips on its own. Think about that for a minute. The whole purpose of having a transponder chip in your key is so that some thief with the right key can't just put it in the ignition and drive it away. If you could program the key yourself by simply inserting it into the ignition and following a few simple steps, what would keep a thief from doing the same thing? If that were true the whole Nissan VATS (vehicle anit-theft system) would be pointless? To answer your question, yes, you are missing something. The procedure you posted above is for programing the key fob, a.k.a keyless remote controller, a.k.a keyless entry remote, a.k.a door lock thing that when you press a button it opens your doors and trunk. It even says this fact it in the procedure you posted. You must have your key programmed by a dealer or someone with a transponder key programmer, such as a locksmith. The dealer uses a Consult diagnostic tool, where as locksmiths will have a viriety of aftermarket programers that work just as well. Either this, or you have the only G35 in the world that can program keys...... in which case you sir have a bad a$$ car

sooo the transponder in the key sends the signal to the ignition, or does the ignition reads the transponder in the key? the reason i ask is because i want to install a push to start, my friends BMW has one but you need to still put the key in a slot(stupid, i know) my other firends mercedes only needs the key to be in the drivers seat(most likely just the vicinity of the ignition), and thats what im aiming for, ive got the whole button thing down, its pretty easy to find online, im just stuck finding a way to boost the 7" range from the ignition/transponder. do i need a more powerful transponder or do i need to somehow find a way to modify my ignition to pick up a boader range(like 5-7ft preferably). i read about one guy who moved his ignition out of sight underneath the steering wheel and then installed the button, and since he kept his key in there at all times(only took it out when he was away for a long time) he could just push the button whenever to start it. but i would NEVER leave my key in the car, hidden or not, just plain stupid imo...
