Offering carputer installations

I made a feeler thread a week or two ago about interest in custom carputer (car computer) installations in G35s.

Here is my personaly carputer installation: https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-coupe-v35-2003-07/45743-carputer-installed-many-many-pics.html
Carputers offer a variety of different functions and can be tailored to whatever needs the user has. Primarily they are used for GPS navigation and MP3 music playback but they can also be used for gaming, DVD/video playback, internet browsing and anything else that a computer is capable of
What I offer is a worry free installation of a carputer in your car where I come to you. With 3 years experience working with car computers, I will handle all aspects of your install so you dont have to. No need to worry about what parts to buy; I will advise on all parts needed. I will then assemble the parts, configure the computer and it install them in your vehicle.

I have now finalized arrangements and my pricing. All prices are flat rate and non negotiable
  • $440 for complete carputer installation which includes: planning of installation, deciding and purcashing parts (at the cost of the customer), computer setup (operating system install, software frontend install, optimization), wiring run trunk, installation of DigitalWheelz screen
  • $330 for just the installation of the DigitalWheelz screen (if you plan to use an off the shelf DVD system, gaming console, rear view camera, etc)
  • $275 for installation of an off the shelf DVD sustem, gaming console, etc utilizing the stock navigation screen

Above service charge includes travel TO YOU within 15 miles of 90266 (the majority of Los Angeles County). Increased distances are subject to travel costs. Alternatively, the customer may bring their car to me for installation and pick it up when finished.

If you have any speciality services other than what is listed, custom quotes can be generated.

Dont hesitate to ask any questions

NOTE: DigitalWheelz screens are currently only 03 and 04 models of either the coupe or sedan. Screens that work with 05s are in the works but are not available at this time

Numbers 310 995 7531, feel free to give me a call

People seem to have a very strong attraction to those Mac Minis and think they would be perfect as a carputer. I would argue otherwise and strongly persuade against using them. I can buy parts that are much better suited in regards to power consumption, heat output and features for less money than even the lowest priced mac mini. Also, the majority of software written for carputer use is intended for the Windows OS. Car computers also need a special power supply (DC-DC with startup/shutdown triggers) so the stock Mac Mini PSU will not due and AFAIK, the required PSUs will not fit inside the case.

This will work with the stock navi screen BUT you will need an AV switcher device and you will experience very poor image quality if you use composite video. Anything besides VGA or DVI will look quite poor. What can be done is converting the computer VGA output to component and then input that into a supporting AV switcher. Also as you mentioned, you will not have a touchscreen interface and would have to rely on other methods

I personally would recommend against using the stock nav screen because of the lack of touchscreen and would also recommend against if composite was to be used since text is unreadable.

(I know we talked on the phone about this but just replying so everyone else can see )

Sucks. I really liked the idea of Mac Mini in my car. It's so nice and compact. Apple stuff is just so much nicer than anything PC offers. Overpriced, I admit. But the quality is superior.

Certainly can. I would recommend using the DigitalWheelz upper glovebox DIN converter for it also.

Installation time varies but I would estimate installation time to be 3-4 hours
Because I charge flat rate, I do not leave until the job is done

The Mac Mini looks large when compared to the Travla Casetronics C150 (my case of choice when doing installations)

It measures 7"x 2" x 10"

$575 for the model with better video capabilities, $525 without.

I would be able to do the install definitely

There is also the NavBox unit seen here generatorlabs.com but its meant for Xbox. I have a feeling it could be modified to work with a DVD player output but Id have to inquire about it
Awesome bro thanks for the quick reply, I was thinking about getting that unit and setting it up with a PS2, what would u charge me for install?

I'm not familiar with that case, but the Mac Mini measures 6.5" x 2" x 6.5". From the numbers it seems smaller to me...

I just think the aeshetics of Apple are much more clean cut and less mechanical than PC items.

My mistake then, wasnt aware it was that small
The Travla is pretty much just as small and for the installations I do it will really not matter since the computer case will never be seen. My choice mounting location is in the rear left of the lower trunk area by the stock amp

I see. That rules out putting it near the front so I can play DVD's on it then I guess? That's what I plan on doing in the future.

Not at all

The computer will be housed in the trunk and the dvd drive will be housed in a usb->ide enclosure and kept in the upper glovebox
Would require no additional wiring either as USB will already be run for the touchscreen
