Driving to Vegas...

Taking mt less than 1K miles sedan to vegas in a couple weeks. Question - does the chp along the 15 use radar or laser (lidar)? I'm intalling a 8500 detector, but face it - laser detection just lets you know that your ticket is enroute!

Thanks,
sd_diver

As far as I know, they use Ka Radar. Even with radar detection, CHP officers like to turn on their sh_it upon assuming that you're going above the speed limit. So if you're cruising at 95, the CHP will clock your speed right before your detector will go off. =/

lol when ur speeding at 120 and u get a KA band u have choices.. mm choices are good

u can either A hit the brakes as hard as u can and hope he didnt notice yet or u can B swirve off the road and make a U turn

if u do get pulled over u can request the court & trial to be in the county u live in.. so hopefully the cop wont show.. lol i had a friend that got off 3 tickets from flordia to california.. but that was outta state

dunno about radar and laser. keep it under 80, you'll be fine. you shoud be able to pick out stretches where you can bring the G into the hundreds.

i just made that run, i picked up ka radar about three times. chp sometimes drives with it on which is nice. didnt get any lidar signals, i know they are using that in palm springs route but not on the 15 from what ive seen. i made the run from oc to vegas in under three hours .

wax your hood well before you go, it keeps the rock chips and bugs down a bit.

If you are going up on a Friday, don't worry about it. You can't get over 85 for more than a few seconds due to the insane traffic and the dummies doing 55 in the fast lane.

I left san diego once at 4:30 am and got to Vegas at 8 am. You do the math 300 miles in 3.5 hours. Let's just say the V1 was my eyes and ears. I did get one or two close calls but the V1 gave me about a mile of notice (nice flat roads) so I got down to speed and just rolled by.

You need to watch out for planes. That's what gets you. Radar detectors don't pick those up. But that's why i leave early in the morning

Just went to Vegas this past weekend for the NHRA sport compact event.I was cruising around 90 most of the time.I saw only 2 chp the whole time. One thing the chp does do is fly overhead & clock your speed, & call down to someone on the groud to get you. There are signs posted "patrolled by aircraft"

I just got back from a week long business trip to the Global Gaming Expo in Vegas. Left Sunday the 11th at about 12:30 and arrived there just past 3:00. I only saw one CHP on the southbound side of the 15 the whole way up. On the way back home I saw two CHP in the middle of the freeway due to a fire in Barstow. The patrol is usually not that bad at all. I don't even have a detector to use.

Later,

Ray

Well, we don't want to throw around numbers do we? I wasn't going over 100 mph too often, but the traffic was really light. And coming from Temecula you're about 1 hour north of San Diego. Plus I drove up the 215 from Temecula which cut some time as well.

Later,

Ray
