Is it illegal to put your front license plate in your windshield in CA?

A couple months ago the chief of police in a suburb by chicago pulled me over because he thought me and my friend were talking about him at the plae we were eating at, and he yelled at us in there too, and he saw I had no front plate plus no license since my shorts got stolen at da park with my license, anyways to make a long story short I used double stick tape to put the plate on the bumper and took a picture and the judge said it was fine and dismissed the ticket for the front plate and i got a new license issued so he dismissed that too and now I get my bond money back, so yea I got lucky

"5201. License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground."
Kinda vague because doesn't explicitly state what the front of a vehicle is.

Like others have stated, the plate must be on your bumper within 12 inches from the ground or something like that...
Having the plate behind the windshield can get you a ticket quicker as they claim it becomes a safety issue because if it isn't secured (maybe even if it is), it can become a lethal projectile in an accident.
