first, get your MSF training, it will save you money on insurance, and save you the riding part of the dmv test...
then go take the writing part of the dmv and you have your M1/ C class license...
get a used bike to learn on, then brand new later on if you are into it... thats my plan!

My first bike was used, you want to get one you will not cry if you drop it. Just be very careful.
But they are so much fun as long as you can control yourself. I have been thinking about selling my 03' 600RR but have not been able to bring myeslf to do it yet...

a friend of a friend got a brand new 1000RR and dropped it at a light, cracking the main fairing into 2 pieces...
^ You're not supposed to drop it but I can see how its not supposed to crack that easily...but depends on angle it drops (what takes the impact).
As far as the original thread starter, you will not learn via a thread like some do to learn stick on a car...I mean if we tell you that the clutch is your left handle, shifter is your left pedal, rear brake is your right pedal, front brake and gas is your right handle you'd tear your hair out...no way to grasp the concept as shifting is different than a car is because you must cylce through ALL the gears to come down or to go up, can't simply choose one and drop it in...

The main fairing is the front plastic part with the headlights. It is usually about $400-$1000 to replace.
If he dropped it at a stoplight it is either too big for him or he needs to get some more experience before buying an $11k bike off the showroom floor. Maybe there are more factors you have not told us but that would suck sooooo bad. I would want to cry even if that happened to my bike.
I have been riding for the last 8 years and I have only crashed once. It was my very first time on a bike, my 95 600F3 and I came to a corner, came to a full stop and went to take off and hit some dirt in the road and went into the ditch on the other side at about 5 mph. When you first start riding, it is not easy to learn how to control a bike. You are best to start out on a dirt bike and get familiar with the controls and feeling. Even if it's only for a month, it can be a huge help.
Whatever you choose, just be very careful and take your time.
It's a blast!
