Stock exhaust with X or H pipes?

Hey guys

I was reading
https://g35driver.com/forums/tech-07...ust-plans.html

and got thinking, since our biggest restriction is our y pipe, why not cut it out and do a custom H or X pipe? Anyone do this comments? any experts on exhaust that can shed some light on which type of pipe is better? I don't think this should cost too much, it should increase flow, so maybe a better sounding exhaust?

this was done by someone; they put in an h pipe there. it would definitely be an improvement. x pipe flows better and smoother than h pipe but h pipe is definitely better than nothing. the y pipe that's stock is stupid restrictive; just eliminating that with an h pipe will do a lot.

So X is better? I know you have the magnaflow X but a regular X pipe it should be fine with stock resonators? I heard H has a deeper nicer sound while X is raspier is that true?

On what basis are you guys stating that the stock Y is that restrictive? Especially when you HR boys get the redesigned Y versions?

BTW I'd go to a resonated X pipe. I don't know the specifics on the HR exhausts but X pipes help eliminate rasp, not cause them

X is better than H. Swapping out the stock Y section to dual pipes with an H or an X into the stock resonators will be an improvement. H is deeper because it's a little more turbulent than the X but they'll both sound good, and sound differences on the stock system is going to be very minimal, if really audible at all.

There was a member who did exactly that with an H crossover, just don't remember who it was.

Hmm... Looks like I'll be needing to get a full exhaust then, before i wanted to get hfc, but still worried about the CEL problem. Oh well more shopping for me then. thanks guys.

why do you need a full exhaust... is the point of this for an audible gain? if so, then yea, I'm not sure just swapping out the Y pipe is going to do much, audibly.

Well really just to help the exhaust to be me free flowing and if there is a nice audible gain that would be nice. what if i just cut out the original resonators and add the magnaflow X? Would that help with sound? See I like your design Sredish but i saw the video you had with the full exhaust, sounds awesome but i'm gonna be traveling quite a bit, seems like quite a bad drone around the 2.5 - 3k rpm range.

I replaced my stock mufflers with magnaflows. Didnt really feel a gain in power and just a little more sound was gained. A month later i had the y pipe replaced with an H pipe. With the rest of the exhaust being stock aside from the mufflers out back, there was a gain in sound, though no drone was added. The most noticeable improvement was the power gain from it. There was no doubt an increase in performance upwards of 3k rpms all the way to 7k. The stock y pipe was so restrictive i couldnt see light coming out the other end when i held it up to the sun.

So why did you go with H pipe and not X? Hmm also was there a change in sound when you just went from Y-H? Thanks!

Cost mostly. An X would have been more than double what i paid for the H. This isnt a 502 big block engine and i dont plan on going FI anytime soon. To me, it didnt seem necessary for an X considering the CFM's being expelled by an N/A 3.5 v6. After further reading into X vs H pipes, i found that in some cases an X pipe can introduce more rasp into an exhaust and often reduced low end grunt. As long as the exhaust pulses are equal on both sides of the engine then thats all the matters really, so in the end, i decided an H pipe was best for the vehicle and for my daily driving needs. There was a noticeable difference in sound, but good sound, and no drone haha.

Heres some videos of before and after

Before

After with H pipe

And some pics.

Hey thanks a lot envied, I might go the opposite route to you get the H pipes first then get the mufflers etc. I really love the stock sound of out cars, just want it louder thats all. I know I know ppl say get HFCs, but I'm still looking into that, since H pipes should increase flow wouldn't it be similiar to getting HFCs? Increased flow more sound?!
