2003 G35 Coupe Driver's side Window not working...*HELP!*

Hey guys,

A couple days ago my driver's side window stopped working, it wouldn't go down, so I kept playing with it and finally it did. Now it won't go back up! :confused2: When I press the button I just hear a clicking noise. Has anyone had this problem before? I did some research and found this is pretty common for our cars for the window motor to crap out, but I'm just over the warranty period so I'm screwed  Also, if anyone knows where to get cheap parts and labor for the fix I'd appreciate it. :) My passenger side window still works fine btw. Thanks in advance!

ajonas 06-19-2007 06:05 PM

THAT SUCKS! I have an 04 and have had both motors replaced. Actually I just got the passenger one replaced again!!! The dealer told me it's very common on these things and for me, they never even asked questions. They just replaced it.

When i was at the dealer the very first time with the passenger side, the mech. came over and gave a light tap on the outside of the door in the middle about a foot down from the window frame. I guess that's where the motor is. THE DAMMMED THING WORKED RIGHT AFTER!!

But it sucks and I feel for you. In about 6-12 months, I'll likely be in the same spot with mine AGAIN!!! ARRRGGHGHHG:icon43:

*BlackG35Coupe* 06-19-2007 11:16 PM

Ouch Infiniti needs to make this an official recall and replace all the window motors for free, regardless of warranty or not. Obviously this is a widespread problem and it looks like the majority of window motors are defective and eventually will need to be replaced. I actually was able to make the window go up again by slamming the door and holding the switch up at the same time. It didn't fix it though, it still won't operate normally, what a PITA!

nghiars 06-19-2007 11:55 PM

do you notice it works in cold but not hot weather too.. that happened to mine.. replaced motor at the dealer under warranty

Meth68 06-20-2007 06:52 AM

Get used to it, I had my motors replaced and 4 months later my driver side did it all over again and they were replaced a 2nd time. I am now on motor #2 for passenger and #3 for driver side and when my windows are all the way up I can hear air coming in through my driver side

jberry 06-20-2007 09:37 AM

My driver side motor is going out, I have to slam the door hard while holding the down button to get it down. Very embarrasing at drive thrus!

G35MC 06-20-2007 10:00 AM

you should get extended warranty.

Stallion 06-20-2007 12:47 PM

I have an 04 coupe and replaced the window motors twice on the passenger side door. Once during warrenty, once shortly after warrenty ran out. Both were replaced for free. There might be a recall or something on this.

smokedhen 06-20-2007 03:43 PM

Infiniti should do a real fix on this! i had to replace my motor as well.

Deezflip 06-28-2007 09:59 AM

anyone tried the reset switch on the motor?

bulldog25 06-28-2007 03:22 PM

Just had my drivers side motor replaced under warranty. Mine would start to go back up then roll partially back down. Piece of crap.

Mine did the same thing and tried the reset button on the motor, so far so good, it worked for me. I didn't had to replace any motors.

lybra975 06-28-2007 08:13 PM

Just wonderful! Mine is an 04 and the problem started on the day a bad storm was about to come through. Luckily my bf has the magic art of slamming his fist on things to make them work and that did the trick for about 2 weeks. Now she is a gonner. I have the original warranty and I am at 53k. Think it is still covered? Whats this I read about resetting the motor? Thanks guys!!

dp_PRIME 06-28-2007 09:31 PM

I had the same problem with my '03 coupe, the motor went out on my once. That's what happened to us folk that jumped up and got the first generation G...prob should have waited, but the 3 main problems we got with ours if anything is: 1) jammed disc changer 2) brake pads wear out to fast 3) and of course the window motor, but i got it fixed once and haven't had a problem in a while.

Honestly, I would just say you go back to the dealer and get it fixed with factory parts. If there is a mechanic u trust that will use infiniti parts then that's good, but otherwise i would just go back to the dealer. Although you should def get an estimate from different dealers around your area.

Good luck.

gogetitg35 07-17-2007 11:53 PM

i just got my first G35c. Pass. window switch is not working. when does the warranty expire on these G's? I'm gonna try the tapping the door method to find out if it works... Thanks.

fluffydot 07-30-2007 10:25 PM

I am having this problem also. It just happens randomly when I am driving. But if I bang on the door or open/close the door then it will work again.

I have taken my door apart and can see anything wrong. I guess it might be the motor after all. Good thing I found this thread. I am going to try pressing the reset button to see if that helps...

otherwise I will have to take it in to the stealership. Mine is an 04 by the way.

travie46 09-01-2007 08:13 PM

My motor went out and dealer replace this under warranty... 6 months later the new motor went out too ( no more warranty ) dealer want $350 plus $150 labor

I have 1 month with my new motor ($175 from tony) and Im Happy for now.

The reset procedure isn't going to help you here.....

^^Thats what mine was doing. Sometimes it would work, sometimes not. Banging worked most of the time but eventually you'll get to the point where you have to bang very hard ,and then it just doesn't do anything at alll. I also had issues with it rolling up slower or in a modulated speed sometimes. I tested my door switches, contacts. wires, etc. It ended up being that inside the motor..there are 2 contact "brushes" (small little spring loaded contacts) that were filthy with metal dust from use. I ended up taking the motor down into pieces, cleaning the inside, re-grease, put it back together and dropped it back into the door. It's been running strong since.

kjgspot 09-04-2007 10:26 AM

man i have the same problem too.... my pass side motor went out and i just called the dealer and they told me 240 for the motor and 100 for labor... man that sucks.... my window would go up but then when it reaches half way it would go right back down...
where would be the reset button on the motor?

scorcher76 09-04-2007 10:38 AM

Reset switch on motor?

Where is the reset switch? I suppose it's on the motor meaning I will need to dismantle my door panels in order to reach it?

S.

gizsf 09-05-2007 04:53 AM

The reset switch is located behind the door panel, very easy to get to.
Check out this thread for more info and link to service manual

Is this on the motor itself...I already took the whole panel off and the cover panel as well that hides the motor...want to give that a try first before I shell out money on the motor.

Thanks,
JD

How far out are you from warranty. One of the local dealer said that sometimes they'll cover up to 80k as a courtesy (I'm sure depending on the prob)

I have the service manual but is it difficult to take the motor apart? Also, what kind of grease is good to use for regreasing the motor? Any help would be much appreciated; I want to try that b4 shellin out some bling on a new motor...since I've tapped the motor b4 and it kinda picks up some speed.

gizsf 09-13-2007 02:06 PM

Once you get the motor asembly out of the door so you can access it, it's only 4 little screw and you can get inside the motor. Once your in there, you should see the little brushes I was talking about, carefully clean them and all of the interior of the motor. Remember which points were greases so you can re-grease them after. Yuor going to have to play with getting the internals back in since the magnets are pretty strong (you'll see what I mean :D , just like that $2 squeeze toy that you can't keep from sliding out of your hand ). If I remember correctly, I think I used a teflon lithium grease for the motor since I had some laying around. Make sure you only lightly re-grease what was greased to begin with. (top & bottom of spindle shaft). As far as the motor reset switch, it should be visible right after you pop the black or willow door trim panel off. It looks like a small black nub (or even a minature drain plug) towards the center & bottom half of the door.

Does anyone have a DIY for drivers side window motor install? i've searched and haven't found one

Sponger 01-26-2008 07:25 PM

^^It's pretty easy. Remove the door panel. After that, there are 10 or so 10mm bolts that hold the door plate to the door itself. Remove the 4 gold nuts holding the window tracks to the door plate. The window motor will still be attached to the door plate. Unbolt the motor and replace with the new one. The gear may not line up with the glass mechanism so you may have to turn the ignition on and hit the window switch until it does. Attach window tracks to place starting with BOTTOM bolts, and then the top. Line up plate dowel pins at top of door and start bolting it back up. To reset, roll window all the way up. Remove the sticker (on plate) where motor is sitting. Hold reset button down and roll window all the way down (do not use auto). Roll window up and put door finisher back one. Done.

LR-G 07-10-2008 10:44 AM

just had mine replaced.
started with the creaking while going up and down.
and when fully closed it would creak and when I hit bumps.

changed under warranty. but i didnt think its so common.
probably due to design?

Passenger Side Window Problems

6 months in after buying my 350Z I had a similar problem. Passenger side window does not go back up. Sometimes when I push up once, it usually goes all the way back up, but then about half way it goes back down. So far I have learned that if I hold the up button, it goes all the way up no problem. If it gets hot or whatever sometimes it just clicks when I push up and nothing happens.
If you open the door and push the window button to "up" and while holding up close the door, the window usually goes up. But that is just a temporary fix. I am waiting for the thing to completely go bad before I open it up.

hi guys,
I guess we all have the same freaky window problem with our G. I have a 04 coupe and lately, my driver window isn't goes up or down, passenger side is fine. I heard you could do it yourself by clean the motor or replace it. My warranty was over so I need to pay it from my pocket. If you guys have that link about this window removal/replacement, please forward. Thanks guys

Here is the link: https://g35driver.com/forums/body-interior-exterior-lighting-diy/218286-diy-ower-window-motor-replacement.html

I did it a few weeks ago and it is pretty easy. I bought my replacement motor from Autozone.

wingsprint410 01-24-2009 09:36 AM

I ran across this thread while searching for tips on removing my door panels to install Dynamat.

Seeing this issues with the window motors got me thinking..

Looking at the photos, it appears that the motor case dose not have any vents. The case is sealed. Most electric motors have some form of ventilation for cooling and to allow some carbon and metal build up to move away from the brushes. Some have had success with cleaning their motors which leads me to believe that build up on the brushes and the commutator is the problem. Other than a short in the windings, worn our or dirty brushes/commutator or a seized bearing, there is not much else in an electric motor that would cause a failure.

Guys who race electric RC cars (not the Toys R Us type- I am referring to 60mph carbon fiber rockets) use spray motor cleaners after every race. Some of these cars use motors that spin at over 30,000 RPM's. They spray the inside of the motor down while it is running, let it dry and then lightly lubricate the bearing shafts. Many use a spray electrical parts cleaner or even Non-Chlorinated Brake Cleaner.

My window motors are working fine. While Dynamating, I will play around and clean my motors and report back.

wingsprint410 01-25-2009 07:49 AM

I think I figured it out!

While Dyanmating my doors, I pulled the window motors apart and I was shocked to see the amount of junk inside them! Mind you that my windows have been working fine- but it was clear that it was only a matter of time before they failed.

It is my opinion that the carbon and metal flake build up in these motors are causing a short in the motor. Bad thing is that guys who replace their motors can expect the motors to go bad over and over. The root cause is the motor case is sealed and there is nowhere for the carbon and metal flakes to go. They just build up inside the motor until it fails. I am 99.9% sure that we are stuck cleaning the motors until Nissan redesigns the motor.

I was going to post pictures, but I found a link to My 350z.com that has outstanding pictures and directions on how to clean your window motors- with one exception.... Nowhere does it mention re-lubrication the motor after cleaning.

READ THIS!!!!-- You MUST lubricate (but not over lubricate) the top and bottom bushing shafts after cleaning the motor!!!

Some have reported that their motors worked for a while after cleaning then failed again. I suspect this is due to not properly re-lubricating or over lubricating the motor. I used electric motor cleaner and lubricant used for RC car motors purchased at a hobby shop. We shall see if this is the solution.

Link with pictures- http://my350z.com/forum/maintenance-...dow-motor.html

fortified 01-26-2009 02:16 PM

Is it always the motor? Mine does not close that last 1/4 to 1/2" when the weather is very cold. Works normal in warm or temperate conditions.
I can still close it when it is very cold, I just have to hit the 'UP' button again, in other words it seems to work manually, not automatically.
I was wondering if it might only be a lube problem for the guides, etc. or does it mean the motor is on it's last legs.

IrockAG35 01-26-2009 02:21 PM

same thing happened to my jeep, sounds like the motor burned out...the infinti window motor is an easy swap, much easier than jeep...i have seibon CF doors..when i took my oem window/motor out..its all basic..search for one..shouldnt be to hard to find..if you need a walk through pm me. gl

jtwenger 02-11-2009 10:33 PM

Just wanted to follow up with what Wingsprint410 has said about the carbon and metal flake build up in these motors.....I too am having the same problem with my window not rolling down...I am going to attempt to clean the motor in the hopes that this will solve my problem....Has anyone cleaned there motor and noticed that the problem has been resolved...or is the problem in fact a faulty motor which needs to be replaced?

I am debating whether or not to buy a new motor right now as my warranty has expired.

gizsf 02-12-2009 03:23 PM

It worked on mine. Make sure you only re-grease the parts that were originally greased though, don't over do it. Qtips and microfiber rags work great to clean out the shavings, u could also use a strong magnet if your having problems getting out the shavings.

MADMAXSS 06-26-2009 03:37 PM

If the motor has a gear with teeth on it its easy to fix but if its a cable I don't know how to fix that one. If its the one with the gear or whatnot I fixed my g/f car which is a hyundai santa fe but window motors are basically all the same. What I did was take the motor apart and it has like a center shaft that has a copper piece attached to the shaft now what you do is to take a piece of sandpaper and sand it down a bit to get the contacts cleaned that way when you assemble it back together it should start back up. Basically contacts get dirty and from use or lack of and you have to sand it down a little to clean them up.

G35 Coupe Window Motor Replacement

alopez218 10-14-2010 05:38 PM

Hi my name is Alfredo and i am new here. I'm 17 and i bought a 2004 g35 coupe like 2 months ago. I wanted to ask this question because i am not sure whats happening to me is the same here. My passenger window goes down and up when you open the door and close it but when you try to lower it and raise it on the inside it wont work. Is that the motor that i have to replace or is it something else. Thanks

g35action 10-14-2010 05:47 PM

Just bought a 03 G35 and the passenger window isnt working. You would think Infiniti would have done a recall on these thing because it looks as if they all do it.

How many hours does a dealer charge to replace this. I have a rebuilt one sitting on my bench and dont feel like trying to do it my self.

lilvi3tboyzz 10-14-2010 10:21 PM

easy take it to the dealer shop, anyways good luck

Evil Wayzz 10-25-2010 04:41 PM

This is happening to my passenger side window! and im out of a warranty also... How much does it cost to buy the part's ill need to fix this? Is it a DIY job or dealer only?

2005 Coupe Driver's side window motor rest help

Hey guys,
So my window motor died and I tore it down to clean it, but it was beyond repair. I got a new motor, installed it and it works like a champ... except I can't reset it for the life of me! I've tried doing the reset procedure a dozen times and it didn't work because it always managed to over-lift when I shut the door and motor down half-way. After experimenting with the procedure and disconnecting the motor and the battery, I finally found a reset "combination" that worked, sort of... I held the reset button while I shut the window then released the button and opened the window all the way. Now the door will shut without the window rolling down, however, the auto up/down function doesn't work and It doesn't drop down when I open the door and motor up when I shut it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to reset it properly or fix the automatic stuff? I feel like I've tried everything and am out of ideas..
Thanks, Mike.
