It's my understanding that the problem shows up in the first 3000 miles. As with ANY car that is NEW TO YOU, you should check the oil regularly (daily) until a pattern is established.

If you find that a new car (under warranty) is using oil, you go to the dealer and have them do an oil consumption test.

all the G's consume oil..just the revup motors are more apparent. if i run my 04 alittle on the hard side i consume about half a quart an oil change. no biggy just chek and add. its all blowby...put a catch can and problem fixed..somewhat..lol

i have an 05 and have an OC of about .5 per 1K miles
I guess it's not enough to demand an engine replacement yet but my concern is that I haven't been keeping all the record of the receipts of oil change after I did them myself.
What is the criteria for claiming warranty? WIll the dealer refuse to change my engine in the event OC level goes crazy?

Do you have any proof of this? Mine uses absolutely no oil between changes which are made at 3000 miles. When I added the spacer I noticed a trace amount of oil in the plenum. Obviously it's a negligible amount in my car and I suspect the majority of G's.

I drove mine fairly hard right from the beginning. I changed the oil at 1000 miles and then again at 3000 miles when I went to synthetic.

Have had OC issues since day one new...over 25 months now. Broke it in per Nissan/Infiniti's recommendations/guidelines.
Doesn't matter imo how it's broken in. You either have a bad rev-up VQ or not.
Currently in testing, since I know I will finally qualify with current TSB released from 2yrs of self monitoring history.

Nissan released a TSB for 350Z back in Nov 07 on this issue. Infiniti finally followed in Jan this year with TSB for rev-up VQ G35's.

OPs stated consumption will qualify for replacement under TSB's chart.
TSB thread on OC is in the same section here...lol

-edit-
oops...just noticed last post was before our TSB was released...sry

What do you guys think about asking for a OC test and possible engine replacement with mods on the engine? I have the MREV+, strup headers, high flow cats, etc (you can see list in sig). What would the dealer do in this case? Tell me im SOL? I think this question applies for a lot of G owners with OC problems.

I'm in the same situation....Take off all engine and exhaust mods save your exhaust, unless you have the stock handy...Why give them any reason to reject your claim

is there any real harm in just leaving it as is? I check my oil and top it off at least once a week so it never gets that low.

I'd say no harm in keeping oil in safe operating level range. OC probably only get worse over time as far as VQ concern, but watch for plug fouling as OC continues.
My concern more so with that would be, the cats and prematurely failing bc of all that burnt oil residue continuing in them over time.

Mods...Only mod I'm running with now is my catback exhaust during testing.

No problem.... Just keep it full. That will keep it from getting worse.

Keep it full to avoid lubrication problems. The problem may or may not get worse.

Post 03 6mt Oil Consumption

I also need to fill my G35 2003 6MT about every 1000 miles with about a half a cup (4 ounces) of synthetic 5w30 Mobil 1 oil. The dipstick basically shows between Low and High when I do an oil change and then drops almost to Low, that's when I add more oil (1/8 of a quart). This happens a little quicker in the summer and when I drive hard, I guess the high temperature of the engine burns oil eventually. Also, just make sure to add oil in very small amounts (about 1/8 of a quart) at a time (since if you overfill the oil above the High line, it isn't good for the engine). Then check the next day after the car sits overnight, don't wipe the dipstick when you take it out, just take the reading off the dipstick as soon as you take it out. Just my $.02
