please educate me. about tuning!!!

Please excuse me for not knowing much about cars and all. When it comes to mechanical stuff about cars, I'm completely lost! It's just like learning a new language.

I search this site about tuning. I googled this subject and still don't understand what tuning is.

From my understanding, tuning is changing spark plugs, tuning belt, etc. Is it? What is a tune up?

I seen on this website. Tuning makes your car gain horse power. How does a car gain hp when tuned? I know tuning isn't a part like an intake.

I've had my 04 G35 coupe for 5 years now. I fell in love with the stock appearance and the stock sound of a G. I really didn't care much about performance till now.
I only have two things upgraded in my engine and they are: CAI and MD 5/16 plenum spacer. Yeah, it's not much but a start. Would this be good enough to get a tune up? Or should I upgraded more parts in my engine before I get it tuned? Is it necessary?

Please feel free to educate me on this topic! I would appreciate it. thanks!

From what I know tuning is programming the ECU (I think), adjusting the A/F ratio, and whatever else there is that goes along with that.

When people are talking about tunes they are talking about ECU tunes.

A tune up is changing spark plugs, belts, etc.

The software most commonly used is Osiris from Uprev.com

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on anything guise

You can not tune the stock ecu as is, uprev is a software used to reflash the stock ecu. Basiclly tuning is optimizing the car so it makes more power.

stock ecu is looked from infiniti, you need to replace with a standalone unit (tunable) or attach a piggyback system to the stock ecu (tunable)

Yeah what they said about tuning... and go with Uprev from Osiris when you get a tune... their website can show you protuners in your area...

But if I were you, I would at least get an exhaust or test pipes/HFC's if not both before you tune. It won't be money well spent if you tune with just a CAI and spacer and then have to retune again if you add anything. If you like the stock G exhaust sound you could just get HFC's because it only enhances the sound slightly... the FI resonated HFC's are not even noticeable as far as sound goes with the stock exhaust.

Due to technological advancements most, if not all, mordern cars (1990s to present) are controlled by the ecu and supplemental electronic components... Our G35's motor are monitored and controlled by these electronic components (engine timing, air fuel ratio, emissions, intake temps, oil temp, water temps, knock or detonation, etc)...

A tune is done by altering parameters in certain areas of the ecu to make the engine produce more horsepower... This can be done in many ways.....

Example:intake mods provide more air to the engine ... The tune will increase the fuel added via ecu to adjust the the ratio and increase power.... Furthermore think of a turbo, the whole concept is tO get more air into the engine at a faster rate.... Tuning the ecu and providing the right amount of fuel will optimize the performance of the turbo... Too little fuel equals boom to much fuel equals boom... Fine line and that's why there good and bad tuners... Knowing how to walk that line is key..... Engine BOOM is never fun .... Hope this helps give a very broad view of what modern engine tuning involves ... Disclaimer: I am not an engine tuner I have just read a lot on different programs used to to tune specifically HPtuner program for many American engine platforms and have a couple acquaintances that are professional tuners that have worked on high HP street cars (High = 800+ HP) thanks
