Possible Compact Flash Hack

I'm getting my G35 this weekend and have been reading about the limitations of the CF cards. Not sure if this would work, but this workaround is functional on the xbox 360...

It sounds like maybe a FAT32 formatting issue for the CF card. The xbox is typically limited to a 4gb drive (when hooking up an external usb hard disk), but it has ipod capabilities. So the workaround is to format the drive in the HFS+ filesystem (Apple) using a program called Macdrive.

Any possibility this could allow for higher capacity cards to be used in the G35?

If so, I'm wondering if a CF USB host adapter card would allow for an external HDD to be hooked up for even greater capacity. See link below:
Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

It wouldn't matter, because the system only reads the first 512 songs. So even if you have a 32GB card, it will be limited in the number of songs the car can read.

Is that not a limitation of the filesystem though? I can't immagine that the same programming that can read an ipod through an interface kit would remain limited if the CF card is running on the same filesystem.

I also doubt it, but you can always try it and post up your results.

its not the file system, its the firm ware in the nav unit. the non nav G's can read 999 songs as apposed to 512 songs.
I also thought about this and thought about formating the card in NTFS or some other format. Have yet to do this tho.

Infiniti really had their head up there *** on this one.

Well it should be easy enough to figure out... but that's a good point. Then again, does the ipod interface get treated the same way as the compact flash? I know when the car reads the cf card it indexes the files and creates its own tree to figure out what's in it... so whether you like it or not, HFS/NTFS/FAT32/whatever, the car might be hardcoded to just read the first 512 entries.

Yeah it's stupid, but it's a stupid system to begin with... once you play with it you will know.

Non-nav Gs don't have a CF slot or HD

Kind of makes it hard for the car to read 999 songs then...

unless you fit 1000 short songs on an mp3 cdr disc.

i would break that disc in half because of the pain it would cause me.

Yea, I can't try yet as mine is being delivered on Saturday... I was just thinking that HFS+ might be a workaround since most everything is built with the ipod in mind these days. If anybody has an extra card and tries it out please post results!

I remeber hearing about performance issues and slow startups on the 4GB CF cards because the system has to do more seeking. any bigger and it would probably get worse. besides, I'd rather just have a few 1 or 2GB cards for $8.00

Seriously? Then what's all the talk on here about nothing more than 4gb? I just bought the 4gb because I didn't think the 16 would work? Any input?

aside from this...has anyone figured out how to put the songs in a specific order with the cf card?
