Possible owner with navi questions

I am close to a 08 G35, but on the few test drives I have taken I am confouned by the navi. It alwoays seems to only give 5 choices of catagoires and then when you do search it only shows 5 items, I don't seem to see a way to get more catagories and also when I search is there a way to have it return more than 5 items? Dealer is useless, they only know how to demo the basics. Also the voice control seems very long winded, you always prompts you with a sentence before you can respond. By tht time I wait for each prompt and respond I can be where I am going. I'm coming from an Acura TL where the Navi was exceptional, voice can be interrupted and you can give it next command, tou can use touch screen while drivng, etc.

Safety, etc

For safety reasons, you can only view the first screen of results (actually, the first screen of most pages on the screen) unless you're stopped. As for the voice prompts, the settings menu lets you pick between 2 options for voice control. One prompts you as you've noticed and the other is much more out of the way (but more difficult to use unless you've memorized all of the commands).

There is a mode which makes the voice command much zippier with less feedback, when you just get the car, it is sometimes good to leave it in noob mode while you are learning, then switch to advanced command and reduced feedback.

As for the reduced options while the car is in motion... yes, it is ridiculous. I blame lawyers of course, as well as people who like to sue because they can't control their own common sense.

For example, the music box is really nice, but I can't search by artist or album or category while the car is in motion... that is insane.

BTW... I hear that the lexus is even worse. You have to have your car stopped with the engine off.

Kluken... There is a module available form KPTechnologies that will unlock this safety feature, making it completely accessible while the car is in motion.
Our other car is an 06 Acura MDX Touring. The Navi in the Acura is great, but the system in the G is much more user friendly. Little things like changing the screen from day to night takes 8-10 button hits in the Acura... 1 in the G.

Cool, I am OK with it locking out while driving and will have to look into the less prompted mode. What about the limited list of selction. The Acura has like 10 categories, the G35 shows like 5 or 6 and then when you search by liek a dining place it only returns 5 choices, don't see a way to show more or scroll?

I think Acura gets better ratings becasue it is easier to use. I find that as it starts to prompt me I can just hit the voice button and preempt it and say the next command, the G35 when you hit voice button it pauses the command and then hit it again and it re-states it. The Acura returns a long list of selctions that you can scroll through.

Is there not a voice command to scroll? I also thought I tried stopping and could never get more than 5.

The Infiniti NAV is one of the big things holding me back, I love Acura's NAV, although slow becasue it is a DVD, it is fully functional voice, touch screen or **** while moving and stopped.

Overall I will agree, the G navi is faster, but when you facter in the delays for those stupid voice prompts I think it is a wash.

If the only thing standing between you and a G is the NAV (which I agree can be icky, I actually like my Garmin street pilot better-but it doesnt have voice commands) and you keep stating your Acura is better...blah blah blah then get the Ac. I dont think any car will be Perfect, just perfect for the driver because they like more pros than cons on whatever car they choose. Good luck.

the thing that bothers me is the fact that you cant search for point of interest by name through voice commands. That would make things SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier

other than that I love the nav system....a lot better than my Jag system. better UI, not as laggy, not as buggy.

The voice commands make up for the lockout

I already have the Acura, just been getting the G35 itch, I agree we tend to support our own selections.
