Audio Upgrade - '07 G35 Sedan No Bose/Nav
Hello All,
Today I purchased a '07 G35 Sedan (to replace my G35 Coupe I totaled last week), without Bose or Nav... so as base, stock as it gets.
I've seen a few threads on upgrading the audio as far as speakers and a subwoofer goes... however nothing seems very current.
- What speakers do you recommend for the front and rear doors? How much of a difference does it make if I buy an amp to power these vs the stock head unit?
- What about a decent 10'' subwoofer and amp? I read in one post that a user was able to mount the 10'' subwoofer in their rear deck rather than using trunk space? Is this possible?
I really appreciate the advice!
Thanks!

as for speakers it's really personal taste. i like alpine and focal but focals are expensive. using an external amp would make a big big difference so if you have the cash i would go for it. driving aftermarket speakers with the stock headunit will usually yield in lower volumes. there's another thread on that here somewhere...it was a good discussion but i don't remember all of it. an external EQ couldn't hurt either but i don't think it's absolutely necessary.
as for the sub, yes, you could mount one in the parcel deck but don't forget that open-air subs typically will not sound as good as putting in a box or a tube in the trunk.

If you keep the stock head unit and add aftermarket speakers, you may get better highs, but you will most likely get less bass than your factory speakers. The factory speakers are engineered to perform well with the power from the factory radio; aftermarket speakers are usually a higher rating.
You will definitely want a sub if you replace the other speakers to help fill in the low end.
I would not recommend Free-air aftermarket subs. Their bass output is probably about 70% less than the same priced boxed sub, and I bet it is harder to control how they sound.
You could mount a sub in your rear deck and build a box around it. This would require a high level of skill to fabricate. The safest bet is to just do a conventional subwoofer. You can make it easy to remove if that is your concern.
