Stereo upgrade-Bose System
Stereo upgrade-Bose System
I bought my 2007 G35X about 4 months ago. It has Bose and navigation. Well like many of the others on here, I was unhappy with the sound quality of the Bose system. Now let me elaborate, I'm 44, I mainly listen to the radio and prefer country music. I wasn't looking for booming bass or a system to shake the windows or blow the doors off. Just something to sound good as I spend a lot of time behind the wheel. I didn't want to spend a ton of money and I wanted to keep the system as "stock" as possible.
I ended up doing a lot of research online both on this board as well as many other places. Its amazing how much pops up when you google g35 bose replacement or something similar. However, I never really found a thread that covered exactly what I was looking for and looking to do which is why I am posting this, maybe it will help someone down the line.
My first thought was to replace the speakers in the doors. I knew from my research that I needed 2 ohm speakers so I purchased CDT speakers front and rear. I ended up with these for the rear doors

and these for the front

I also replaced the rear sub with one I bought at WalMart. Yes I know not Walmart but this was a very highly rated Kicker 10" sub. I decided I didn't want a huge sub box in my trunk so I just mounted it on the rear deck where my old one was. It was a tight fit but it worked. Yes I know this is a 4 ohm speaker but by the time I bought this I already knew I was going to upgrade my amp.

Well I will be honest, I wasn't terribly impressed with the improvement in sound quality, perhaps a little better but not great. My next step was to replace the amp. I knew I needed something with speaker level inputs, I did not however realize that I needed something that could handle differential balanced inputs. I wanted just one amp that could handle everything so I ordered this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SOUNDSTREAM-...item2c6bcab7d1
I ordered this amp because it had speaker level inputs, good reviews and was inexpensive. I'm not sure it was the best choice, it is huge and as it turns out the fact that it did not handle differential balanced inputs was a problem. I hooked up the amp and it sounded just horrible. That is when I learned about the balanced inputs. So my next step was to order one of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AudioControl...item19d5a2d3d4
After getting that hooked up, I was amazed. All the background noise, engine hum was gone. The speakers sound amazing. I can thump like an 18 year old. I can crank this thing up and make my doors rattle if I wish to. It sounds incredible, at least for my 44 year old ears, I'm sure to some audiophile probably not so much. I do almost think I was better off just getting a regular amp and getting the audio control unit as opposed to an amp that accepts balanced differential inputs. Now I can upgrade/change to any amp I wish in the future and I still only have about $230 in my amp.
I have about $600 into this upgrade. That is a fair amount of money but I was quoted $400 just for a 5 channel amp and installation at a local shop and it also did not accept the differential balanced inputs. I did do all the work myself. It was not simple but not super complicated either. I did install a few stereos in my cars when I was in my teens so I did have a little experience. For the record, I mounted my amp on the back side of the rear seats in the trunk, its visible but out of the way. It was a pain to mount there as it probably weighs 15 pounds and I had to drill into the steel to mount it.
I realize this post would have been better with pictures, but I didn't think about it until after I was done and had everything all buttoned up. Anyway if there is someone looking to upgrade their audio system, I hope this might help them.

So basically it would be pretty easy to use my Alpine PDX-5 5 channel amp in place of my Bose amp to do an upgrade pretty similar to yours? I used this amp in my 2010 Evolution in place of the Rockford amp it came stock with until I sold it and it sounded awesome. Currently I am only using the subwoofer side of it to drive my JL 10W3v3 but would love to clean up the sound for the rest of the Bose setup.
It should be pretty easy to use it to drive all 5 channels. I don't know that amp in particular but if it has differential inputs then you could probably hook right into it. Otherwise a sound processor like the one I bought does the trick nicely. Let me know if you have any specific questions I can help you out with.
I spliced into the factory wiring. Essentially I cut the wires at the harness going into the Bose Amp and spliced new wires to feed into the amp/sound processor and also going from the new amp back to the factory wires going to the speakers. I didn't run any new wiring but for the wires from the harness into and out of the amp. I used the factory service manual, which I found online, to find what wire is what.
