Canadian Owner with US Vehicle - ECU reprogram, Changing the Dash Cluster and rims!

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum as I just picked up my 2008 G35x in early January. I bought it in NY state to save almost 10 Grand over the price in Canada. You guys don't realize how good you have it... anyhow, I have three issues I'm dealing with. I'm thinking of changing the speedo from mph to km/h (and the odometer is in miles, not kms) and have been told that the entire dash cluster would require changing. The dealer here in Toronto quoted $1700+ for the part. My questions are:

1) Have any of you guys done this on an 07 or 08 G35 sedan?
2) Do you think it is necessary to change the entire cluster to achieve this?

If it's this expensive, I may not do it.

My second question is about the voice activated commands. In my 2008 G35x, in alternate command mode, I still only have basic command to, for example, turn the radio to am or fm, but not to tune in a specific station. The manual I got with the car (ironically) has a canadian section in which all of these more advanced commands that I understand were standard on 07 models are explained. I have one question on this:

3) Has anyone re-programmed the ecu of an 08 to get the expanded 07/Canadian commands?

Last question, sorry for the long post.

4) I want to put on 19 or 20" rims. Can anyone recommend a good rim/tire that suits the vehicle or a place where I could get oem rims cheaper? I see the previous generation's rims all over ebay.

#1, no clue

#2, same ^

#3, you can't(at least i think), its in the nav software, not the ecu. the 07's have more voice commands then the 08's. the original run of 07 got complaints that the voice commands were too complicated to remember so infiniti took out a few. BUT you have Ipod control in the 80's. so don't complain too much

#4, nope

thanks for the responses...

Thanks for the response. I'm in Toronto. I wonder if the '08 G35x sold in Canada has the ipod interface or if it is all the 07 stuff?

I love 99.9% of the car. The only things I'm a little disappointed with are that the trunk cd changer doesn't play mp3 cds (my '05 6-disc in dash changer played them) and that I can't load songs to the music box from any source available to the car. That just seems silly. Also, i loved those reclining rear seats mostly as a bragging feature.

I posted some pics of my ride for my friends from out of town. Right now I have snows on the oem 17" rims, but want to get 19s for summer.

I also have a US model in Canada. I was told that if you replace the odometer you will void your warranty.

Congrats and welcome. I'm just north of you - Richmond Hill. I am also looking for set of 19s and really like the look of the M35/45 rims. Did some searching around here and found a few owners who have them. You need 10mm spacers and longer studs to accomodate though.

It was the agincourt infiniti dealer here in Toronto that told me it could be done before I got the car, so I would be suprised if the warranty was made void so long as a dealer did the work. But I'm not 100% sure.

m rims and gauge swap

I did change the range meter and the average speed and all that to km/h using the settings in the dash. I was able to change the satnav no problem too using settings. The only thing that didn't change when I adjusted the dash to metric was the odometer and A/B trip meter. They seem to stay in miles, which isn't really a big deal. It's mostly the idea that when I sell the car down the road, I thought it would be more appealing to a Canadian buyer with a fully metric dash.

I love the M45 rims. I know for the G35x you have to make sure that all 4 wheels are exactly the same circumference, which is tough if not impossible with different width wheels (so I've been told) becuase of different tire profiles being available on wider rear tires.

Do you know if there's a G35x owners club in Toronto/GTA?

Thanks,
jtebb

All the new rims have to be the same size, not the same size as stock.

Warranty replacing the cluster --> If I were you I would get it in writing that this in no way will void the warranty and I would keep the old parts.

in writing... tire profiles.

Absolutely I would. I'm not sure I'll bother as the mph gauges don't bother me really, having driven the car for about 1100 miles now. Most of the time I just drive with the traffic anyhow. The dealer quoted me 1700 just for the part, and I imagine it's not a quick thing to change.

Has anyone out there put wider tires on the rear of a g35x? Can you get tires with the same profile for different width rims? I ask because a large number of the 19 and 20 inch rims out there for sale are staggered (have wider rears).

Anyone have 20s on their car? I heard that 20" tires were more common and therefore cheaper than 19s... any truth to this?

As I understand, you should not have staggered rims on the X due to the awd. The 19s on the M35/45 look fantastic and are not staggered. Look here: https://g35driver.com/forums/media-share-v36-sedan/200057-07-g35x-wheel-pics-only.html
