Help: Rusted Brake Rotors

Hey all,

I purchased an '07 G35S 6MT last February (2007) and about 4 months ago I started seeings rust buildup on my brake rotors where the brake itself isn't touching. I'm not sure if anyone else has had this issue, but it's really starting to bother me as it kinda makes my car look trashy. I talked to my dealer about it briefly and they said that it was fairly normal but I didn't have them take a good look at it when I brought it in for my last services.

Basically, on all four wheels (most noticeable on the rear), there is a circular buildup of orange rust. It's my understanding that this probably shouldn't happen for at least a good 30k-60k miles. My car is just over a year old now and it seems odd that I have this problem. Is this normal or is anyone else experiencing this? I will post some pics when I get home from work.

Just some background information, my car has been mostly garaged since I purchased it. It sits outside sometimes when my brother takes the garage for his 335i. I live in a relatively moderate climate (bay area, california) where there is moisture in the air but not nearly as bad as some coastal areas.

Anyone have any tips for removing this rust buildup or can provide some insight if I should be more concerned or if theres some greater root problem? Thanks in advance for any response!

Sounds normal to me, especially where you are located. If you notice when you wash your car, there is always a light coating of rust on the rotors, as soon as you drive the car, it disappears!

It's normal....
Zinc plated rotors will stand up a little longer, but it's inevitable.

true, this is normal and nothing to fear. Once you brake, the rust will come off. perfectly normal

To eliminate the rusty look on the non contact portion of rotors, you can opt to spray the entire surface of both sides of the rotors with a high temp paint. Once the brake pads make contact with the rotors, the non contact portions will remain protected by the remaining high temp paint.
