Transmission (Is it ok to downshift to reduce wear and tear on the brakes?)

Is it bad to put it into sport mode and shiftdown a gear or two when I need to get the car slowed down quickly and then put it back in auto?

Thanks

Not really, if you do it too often it may cause problems but I'm pretty sure our trannies can handle it if its done once in a while. Otherwise Infiniti would put some sort of lock against it.

why would you do that instead of just pressing on the brake pedal? You know, brake systems cost a lot less to replace than tranny and engine. Why would you downshift to slow down fast? If you need to slow down fast, brake is your best option my man.

I meant in conjunction with the brakes. I've only done it a couple of times.

it won't hurt any thing on the tranny and engine. the car rev matches to prevent this among other things.
if i were you i would do it 24-7, every time u have to stop or slow down. your breaks will last a LOT longer, and ur tranny and engine won't suffer at all.

so downshifting will save u $ in pads and rotors.

ugaexploder is right in the fact that the drive train is alot more $ then brakes, BUT when was the last time u had to replace a drive train because u were down shifting?

you know how trucks make that really loud noise when they are slowing down, its becasue they are down shifting...

I personally wouldn't go so far as to say that but downshifting like that is fine when done occasionally.

i think if you put the car in ds, and stop short from like 40, the car will automatically down shift and get the rpms up to like 5k.

haha well you could try braking a little sooner that way you won't have to put so much stress on the brakes.

and yeah it does downshift when in DS (when u press the brake a little hard), which btw sounds so good

I do both. If I can't slow down fast enough with my foot off the gas pedal on the highway, I downshift once or twice, depending on my speed.
If I have to stop any faster/sooner than that, I brake.

wouldn't that waste a lot of gas having your Rev's so high?

Not too much since it's for a very short period of time. It would if you were to keep it in a low gear though.

I personally don't even think about gas mileage since this is a performance based sport sedan.

+2 I don't do it so much for braking (although sometimes that too), as to be in the right gear for the corner.

Why go to sport mode? Downshift with the shift paddles.
