New Tires and Break-in Period

Hey guys - just wondering what you guys have done with your break-in period.

How many miles or km did you take it easy on your new rubbers till you let it rip?

The person at the tire place told me 50km is enough. I go on tire rack and they say 500 miles!!! which equates to 800km!! Seriously!?

Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks.

Wes

It depends on the tire, my Falken FK452's took its sweet time to break in and burnish off the molding compound... close to a 1k miles. Other tires i've had before (Potenza, General Exclaim UHP, HTR+, PZero Nero) took about 500mi. They are mostly all-highway and driven relatively easy.

Welcome. You don't have to go by the mile count though, it's fairly easy to know if the tires are broken in. The traction increases noticeably.

See the thing is, the tire already feels like there is glue. Its super sticky!!!

To the point that turning the steering wheel is difficult. lol I wonder how much more stickier it can get.

I just put a pair of New General Exclaim UHPs on the rear of my 04 G35 Coupe without any info on breaking them in. The front tires are about 50% worn. The first ramp I came to, the VDC kicked in and I learned right away that the tires were slipping. You cannot mistake the brakes working to correct the slippage of the new tires. I have now put on over 100 miles and have noticed the slipping decreasing. Yes, I can see now that tires do need some break in time to release the silicone compounds within the rubber before the meat of the tire makes the best contact with the road.

With my falkens, I believe I drove about... 800km or so before they were fully broken in.
