Tire question/help

I currently have a set of mint condition Privat rims on Dunlop SP02 tires. The tire size is 225/45/18. They came off of my 2005 Nissan Altima SE-R, I had thought the set would fit without problems on my 2008 Infiniti G35xS, however when I went to the local tire shop last weekend, the guy there told me that the size was not correct, the G stock size is 225/55/18 and that the smaller size - 1) could be problematic for the car, 2) would throw off my speedometer, ie: shows I'm going 65 when in fact I'm going 62 (adding more miles) and 3) he's saying that looks wise, since the tire is smaller its going to make the wheel gap look even worse. So, now I'm looking at a set of 20" wheels, but before I bite the bullet and make a purchase, I want to be sure what he's telling me is accurate. It would obviously be easier & cheaper to go with what I already have. Thanks.

Also if anyone local is interested in this other set of rims/tires if I can't use them let me know.

Thanks.

First off the stock tire size is 225/50/18 and yes that height of 45 will look a bit strange, and it may even cause your traction control and ABS to malfunction due to the rear diameter and front diameter having a difference of more than 3%. (tricks the computer into thinking you are constantly spinning the tires due to one rotating faster than the other)

I'd put 'em on and see if its worth the price of new wheels and tires to fill the wheel wells like OEM, cant be much worse than our monster truck X's are already . Plus its free to put one wheel on, if you do it yourself just to look at it.

If all four tires are 225/45/18 you wont have a prob with your VDC or ABS, which it sounds like you do, so that'll be fine. A lot of speedo's are this far off any way, my STi read +5MPH, my G seems dead on compared to those cop radar displays.

Whoa! I checked out your domain page, and this is your 4th car. Surely by now you know how to replace tires, right? Put 'em on and make up your own mind. There are 3 good points of view here, your point is they should fit, and they will. The salesman's point is they're not correct, and if you put 'em on he'll have wasted his time answering your questions. Kregg's point is to try them on and make up your own mind. Just glancing at tire rack, your OE tires took 772 revs to crank out a mile, and the same tire in your size (yours may be different) took 802. That tells me that your speedo will read a little high, your mileage will get a little worse, and you'll run out of warranty a little sooner with those tires. I wouldn't ask a tire salesman if it's alright to put on a spare set any more than I would go to Starbucks with my own teabag.

What's really confusing about your post, though, is if he convinced you that your non-stock tire size wasn't correct, why would you assume you need new wheels?

First of all, yea I know how to change tires, but its no-charge to have them swap the set over, so I go there because its free (and easier!). I posted on here to get advice from other G owners, I mean thats what these forums are for right? Lastly, try and read and comprehend my post. I dont NEED to get new tires and the salesman isnt convincing me of anything. Its time for summer rims and tires and if my old set would fit the car it would be a cheaper easier option than buying a new set. People like you are the reason I barely post on these forums, if you dont have anything positive to add, then dont bother responding.
