My Falken FK-452 Feedback

I have to say I have owned a lot of different tires in my life, and these are hands-down my least favorite. I would highly recommend NOT buying these tires. This is at least my 10th set of high performance tires, and hands down the worse in several areas. This set of Falken's actually performs in the middle of the pack in dry performance (not too bad), but the wet performance and tire life are awful.

In really wet weather here in the Dallas area, I could not go over 45-50 MPH in heavy rain if there was water build-up on the major highways/interstates. The hydro-planing resistance of these tires stinks.

Over the past month I have taken 2 road-trips that accounted for about 2000 miles. These 2 trips absolutely chewed through the tires. The rears have LESS THAN 5000 MILES AND THEY ARE BEYOND BALD. They were actually bald around the 4000 mile mark, but I was stuck out of town and had to drive home on bald tires. I am not sure if it is the excess heat or what, but the life of these tires stinks. I have always managed to get at least 10,000 miles out of similar tires.

Also, for some background.... My car is lowered on Eibach springs. I am running SPC camber arms on the rear. I had an alignment done the day I put this set of tires on. My toe is really close to 0 all around, and rear camber is adjusted to about -1.3 degrees of negative camber. The wear is fairly even, but slightly worse on the inside as would be expected with my alignment. I had my alignment checked and it is still the same as it was when I put the tires on. I can't find any other reason for the excess wear.... My car only has 6000 miles on it. The tires went on around 1500 miles, and I have not done anything more than mostly highway miles, and an occasional spirited drive (no races or peeling out).

Over the last 8 years I have also had the following tires for reference (there are a couple that I can't remember):
Sumimoto HTZRII
Nitto NT-555
Kuhmo Escata 712
Bridgestone Pole Position S-03
Bridgestone RE040
Falken FK-451
Kuhmo Escata ASX
BFG KDW2
Bridgestone RE050

I have over 20K on my tires and while I'm not exactly easy on them, and they still look almost brand new. They're fantastic on the dry roads and almost just as good in the rain. Rain was my one worry with these, being my first set, and I was very pleasantly surprised. They're not very good in the cold but I do have a winter setup and with the mileage I have on them now, I'm noticing that they are starting to make a bit of noise where they were dead silent when they were new.
Other than the noise, they've been great and lasted way longer than I expected as well.
I'd buy them again.

Sorry your experience was not as good.

I've had 2 sets of Falken 452's, IMO they are good tires with good traction in all types of weather (keep in mind I live in TX and it only rains once every 10 days here in Austin). They tend to be noisy once they wear out but are still not bad. I do agree with the OP about tire life they do not last as much as other sets I've had. I only got about 9,500 miles out of my last set and this current set will be about the same. Maybe the fact that you have a sedan has something to do with the poor tire life...?

Interesting that you both got a lot more life out of them than I did. Not sure what the differences are. 20k is crazy (although I am pretty sure you rotate yours).... Even 9500 sounds like a lot compared to what I got. Maybe I drive like a maniac and I don't realize it.... I should mention that my front tires look great, and I could probably get another 10k out of them. That would point to either my rear alignment, or the way I drive. I just don't think either is an issue (my front alignment is worse than the rear at -1.8 degrees of camber).

Seriously, I have had many sets of similar tires, and I thought I did all the right things this time. I really don't know why these tires have done so poorly.

One other thing I should clarify.... The wet weather performance is actually OK. The hydroplaning resistance sucks in heavy rain. We got a lot of heavy rain in April-May, and on the few occasions there was heavy build-up, my car was all over the place. The handling performance on wet roads was OK for a high performance tire.

I have tried two sets - I stayed away from Falkens, but I'm back on the Bridgestone RE050A now. I just came from Goodyear F1 AS - NEVER AGAIN.

The Potenzas get a little noisy when worn, but NOTHING like the F1 - the cupping and uneven wear was bananas.

I have three HPDE and over 10k miles on mine now. Fronts are at about 70% and the rears are about 40%...maybe 50%. They have been nothing short of great in the rain for me.

I just got back from Discount Tire. They had no further suggestions.... They did give me a free tire (basically I am buying a new tire, and they are giving me one). They were pretty surprised, but they helped me out.... Needless to say, I did not go with the Falken's again. I am going back to the BFG KDW's. I will report back on how long they last.

I'm on my first set of FK452's. I like them a lot! I haven't tried them in pouring rain though.

So, a lot of mixed reviews.... Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am more confused, but it is good to hear additional feedback.

I was looking into Falken FK452's and Toyo T1R's for when I get my new wheels and after lots of searching, I saw that the Falkens have very few bad reviews whereas lots of people seem to be unhappy with the Toyos (although some people swear by them).

I don't know what could have caused the short tire life. I'm planning on running around -1.8* of camber to fit my wheels and I spoke to someone who is running about the same camber on his G with the same exact 245/35/20 275/30/20 Falkens I'm planning to
get and he said he got about 15k before flipping them and another 10k or so after that...

This tire thing is confusing the hell out of me since I need a well performing, directional summer tire so I can flip them once the inside wears out.

That's strange indeed. The treadwear rating on the FK452s is very high, so for them to be gone at that low of a mileage is curious.

Is the entire contact patch bald on your rears, or just the inside edges?
