Tire size question - hankook ventus v12

My well worn Potenzas have given me a surprisingly long 29K miles, but one of the rears has developed a not-so slow leak - need to get some tires asap.

I want to get the Hankook Ventus V12's, but they are only available in 225/45-R18 for the front.

Should I order rears in 245/40/r18 instead of 245/45/r18 to keep the same diameter as the front? Will the ride get a lot rougher? Will sticking to 245/45's in the rear screw with the ABS if I have 225/45's in the front?

Thanks for you help!

OEM 07' G35s
225/50 r18 front
245/45 r18 rear

You could go with 45's in the front and rear with no problems. dropping the sidewall by 5mm in front and rear will give you sharper handling with a very slight increase in the ride. After i dropped my car and went to 19's with 35 sidewalls i thought it rode better!

Cool thanks man. I'm thinking I'll go ahead and just bump the rear profile down to 40 aspect ratio to match the 45 aspect ratio fronts.

Wow another question about 225/45's on the front... if only this forum had a search function.

Hi G force,

I have an interest in the Ventus V12's after Car & Driver Aug 09 review.

If you place 225/45-R18 on the front, you exceed original diameter size by 3.28%.

If you place 245/40-R18 on the rear, you exceed original diameter size by 3.64%

Anything over 3% of original diameter size can affect braking performance.

good tire size calculator:
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

They allow you to visually compare tire sizes, and list all tire brands that fit the size requested.

hope this helps.

That is much appreciated information. I've been looking at a lot of older posts and it seems pretty mixed. I'm going to keep looking into it and try to make a final decision (and filling my tire every morning). I'm almost set on the Hankooks from the article and the price, just wish they made a 225/50 or 235/45.

and how did you get those percentages? When I use the tire calculator you linked I get 2.67% for the 225/45 & that is well within the 3% threshold

real simple.
stock sport package 18" front tire is 225/50/18
newly proposed front tire size is 225/45/18

thanks

I sent an email to Hankook a few days ago. They apologized and indicated that they would not make the 225/50 for our fronts. I've got 23,700 on the original Potenzas, and I drive like grandma in the rain.

Dear Voltaire:

I’m sorry, but there are no plans to manufacture this size tire at this time in the K110.

We appreciate your interest in our tires. Thank you.

weird, but if you compare 245/45 to 225/45 the difference is 2.67%

so in other words, a 225/45 paired with the stock rear size of 245/45 is perfectly acceptable. Really who cares what the difference is between the two different front sizes? its the front & back size combination that matters.

I still want these tires. I went back and looked at my snow tires, I run a 225/45F and 245/45R and I did not have problems with my VDC or ABS, so I guess that answers that question. However, the front tires did look a little weak, but I believe the offset of my snow rims makes it worse (rears are more aggressive and fronts are more tucked). I don't want my summer wheels to look like this though.

I might still go with the hankooks and run 225/45F and 255/40R. That gets the sidewalls as close together as OEM. The risk I'm worried about is a lower profile making the wheels look a little small (the 18" OEM's are barely cuttin' the mustard as it is).

I'm not feelin that 225/45 gap shown in your pix. Are you putting the Hankooks on the rims in your pic? If so, you might be able to do 245/45 all around.

In as much as I like the Hankooks, i'd go to 235/50/18 and 255/45/18 as suggested by other forum members for the sport package 7.5f 18" and 8.5r 18" rim. Unfortunately the Hankook is not even offered in a 235/50.

So, I might just try the Continental's ExtremeContact DW in the 235/50 and 255/45 as reviewed on Tire Rack:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=120

I tend to lean more on the favorable reviews of the wet handling and comfort levels of the Continental's, not to mention the overall aesthetics are a plus for me, and I think they got a free camera deal from Continental.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the continentals at 235/50 and 255/45 as well. I won't be buying til next spring since I'll be able to ride on the potenzas until I put my snows on this winter, but next spring I'm almost 100% going with the continentals. The hankook look awesome but unfortunately the sizing is just a tad off.

I hear you on the gap, the offset makes it worse too. The new tires are for my OEM sport rims, those rims/snow tires are to get through the winter, they were bought from someone who sized them for a G35 coupe.

I'm starting to lean towards exactly what you had mentioned though. Either go with 245/45s or just find another brand. I've been doing tons of searching on 245 tires on a 7.5" rim. conclusion is it can fit, but there is a risk of sidewall bulge and rollover. It probably comes down to personal preference. I could try 245's all around and if it turns out bad just save the fronts as a replacement set for the rears later.

I'm gonna start researching other brands, the conti's look good. I might just end up going with something that is a guaranteed correct fit. I am one indecisive bastard.
